Does any one "mistake" in writing bother you more than others?
For me, it's when a sentence ends with a preposition. I have tried to ignore the ill-placed prepositions - unsuccessfully! I really don't like seeing it my own work, but have on more than one occasion witnessed it slip in my writing.
What about you? Is there anything that is difficult for you to ignore?
I don't think I'm bothered by any mistake grammar-wise more than others. I do happen to dislike trendy spelling such as you find in twitter posts or Facebook posts when reading non-twitter or Facebook posts. I realize that incorrect spelling started because of lack of space, but when it spills into other writing I feel the world is is becoming dumber all the time.
Yes! I am bothered when others say "The reason........... is because......" Using the words "reason" and "because" in this way would be repetitive.
INCORRECT: "The reason I ate all of the ice-cream was because I like sweet food."
CORRECT: "The reason I ate all of the ice-cream was that I like sweet food."
Oh, and improper use of pronouns bother the heck out of me:
INCORRECT: "If I was him, I would have finished my project days before."
CORRECT: "If I were he, I would....."
INCORRECT: "The dog runs faster than him."
CORRECT: "The dog runs faster than he." (Short for: "The dog runs faster than he does.")
Also, I completely despise it when someone uses a run-on. The most stupid, most common mistake (I think). Use the comma, period, semi-colon, colon, and transition words properly, like we learned in elementary school!
LEARN, people.
PS. I guess this is not ONE "mistake," but THREE. Oh well, they annoy me equally much.
Great question! As an English teacher I see many elements of texting and e-mail migrating over into essays. Some of the more irritating:
-gonna
-gotta
-probly
-b/c
and my personal favorite,
-Imma (as in "Imma go to the movies this weekend").
I'm a grammar Nazi in front of friends. But the fact is, I'm actually not that great at English myself!
When people say "your welcome". No. It's not your welcome. You don't own welcome. It's you're welcome. Because you are welcome. Get it right.
for me, no. as long as you deliver your thought to others and they understand it, there is no problem with that.
For some reason it's when people use lower case i's when referring to oneself. I do it on occassion, but it just sticks out like a sore thumb when I check on my hubs later to re-edit. (I always re-visit and double check these things after a few days so that I can see if I missed any mistakes).
"Dear Internet,
I don't mean to sound trashy, but please, feel free to use me whenever you want to.
Signed,
Grammer."
Mixing up "you're" and "your". It makes me cringe whenever I see someone use these incorrectly.
I hate when people use 1990's to mean 1990s. It's plural, not possessive.

For your searching reference, I'm sure other places have (or will) be talking more about these; but Pilly.com published an article on October 6th, titled - 'Here's what fake Russian Facebook posts during the election looked like' - complete with image captures. They are pretty much what most of us...
