Are short poems not eligible for the HubPages contest that started today?

Saw that entries must be 500 words, which would make short poems ineligible, or require they be accompanied by a lengthy description.

It is my understanding the poem must be 500 words, including the description. I had what I thought a great poem, but I couldn't stretch it out to 500 words, so I just published it anyway.

Well , i actually had a poem that was 500 words and then the description actually made it 835 words or so , however , it was submitted TOO early , soo ... I just made it A Hub , sucked for me , but good for other contest entrants i guess:) good luck !

To be eligible yes 500 words must be used in the completed hub.  You can write an introduction telling what inspired you to write the poem or give some insight into it.  500 word poems are hard to write much of the time.  You also will need a photo on each entry that is used legally.  Read the rules to find out everything you need to know.

Wheww I just figured this out today before the contest, and had to scramble!  They need to be 500 words--It's the dumbest rule ever!!  I basically had to create an entire hub around my poems.  Don't worry though--you have until November 22nd to keep adding poems to the contest!!!

    I believe they do...

Good luck! I hope you enjoy this contest, even if longer poems are needed!

There are many ways to make the hub 500 words. Write an introduction about what you were feeling when you wrote the poem, why you chose that subject, even an explanation of the form of poetry you have written.

Yes i think the rules state that you need to have 500 words to be eligible in the competition.

There are some minimum requirements for hubs, but I'm not sure exactly how they relate to posting poetry. From a publication standpoint, if you have an extremely short poem, it is beneficial to add commentary or extra content. You can provide extra information for the reader and it helps search engine ranking. For example, if your poem is about dealing with the death of a loved one, you could provide a short commentary on the feelings behind the loss. You could also provide some links to information about dealing with grief. This provides extra, applicable content for search engine ranking, but more importantly, readers who find the poem because they are dealing with a loss will have additional resources.
