Sirius Black from Harry Potter is my favorite character from all of literature because he is a dynamic character. He isn't strictly good or evil, but always cares for Harry like the father he never knew. smile

Professor Ransom, who was a professor of linguistics and etymology I believe at Oxford University.   He is the protagonist in all three books of the space trilogy by C.S. Lewis.  "Out of the Silent Planet"  -  "Perelandra"  -  "That Hideous Strength"  -  fabulous character, deep moral and ethical underpinnings  in these terrific books which have stood the test of time.   After fifty years, they are still in print and are rediscovered by each successive generation.

Picking a single character is a hard one! I usually tend to enjoy books as a whole, like paintings, focusing only a little on singular characters. I think the most memorable character I've ever read was Dr. Cherijo Grey Veil / Torin from S.L. Viehl's Stardoc series. That was a darn fine series! She was an awesome character! So strong, feisty and uncompromising!

    There are several.

One character I remember is named Wolf Larsen.  He is from the "Sea Wolf" a short story by Jack London.  It was a study in balancing the animal nature of mankind with the veneer of civilization.  It felt that way to me.

The other is from Ernest Hemingway's "Old Man and the Sea".  The character is the old man; but, I cannot remember the name.

The Caterpillar from "Alice in Wonderland."  I believe that is from "down the rabbit hole", not "through the looking glass."  He is really a minor character; but, I like the guy.

These are the one's that stand out to me.

Hester Prynne. Now there was a person with nerve and verve. Are there any Hester Prynne's around today? Are any of you made of the same stuff?

"Rhett  Butler " from the famous American classic ..... "Gone With The Wind "

I am an avid reader and have never found such an intense personality any where else.

Makes me feel that every girl should have a Rhett Butler for herself.

You will never be able to find a real man again  as such as he is !

Cathy, from Cathy's key. She was a well developed character with a good sense of humor, something that isn't very often found in the written word.

Oh my, there are so many.  I tend to read (1) for entertainment (2) for the message that the story is providing...and there is always a message.  There are many characters in the classics that I love one, of course, I've written about before is Jane Eyre and Mr. Rochester.    I also love the Stephanie Plum character in the Janet Evanovich novels;  the Jane Whitefield character in the Thomas Perry novels....both are strong women---Stephanie is funny while Jane is mysterious.

But,  to date, my all time favorite character is Mildred Peacock from the Terry McMillan book titled Mama.  Mildred changed my opinion about a great many things...but about welfare mothers in particular....Mildred was a survivor who did whatever it took to keep her family together and give her children a sense of love, safety and protection.  I read this book about 20 or so years ago and  certain passages I have almost memorized.  This book and it's main character taught me not to judge others for "any" reason and I will never forget how I felt as I read Mildred's story....it changed me at the core.

I would have to name two characters as I can't pick between them.
One:  Atticus Finch in 'To Kill A Mockingbird.'  His simple humanity and justice make him the type of man I want to be when I grow up.
Two:  Doc in 'Cannery Row' and 'Sweet Thursday.'  For about the same reasons above and his generosity.

    Hi ytsenoh,
My favorite character is Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee. Atticus was a person who did what he thought was right even though the people around him disagreed with his thinking.

my favorite character is Ramon, from the Black Pearl by Scott O'Dell....
Ramon was a young boy who sought adventure and found it as the town's people searched for the black pearl and attempted to avoid the manta diablo, El Diablo,
as you read of his adventure, it was possible to identify with his experience and 'be there' with him.

Janelle from the Blood Jewels Triplogy by Anne Bishop.
The way the character grows and discovers herself and morphs into a completely different person, all while staying the same is a great masterpiece as it follows human development extremely well.

I loved "Jay Gatsby" from The Great Gatsby. His ability to re-invent himself and create his own character in genius. He was able to believe in hope so much that he made his dreams into reality.

This is a great and seriously difficult question. I have a couple.

I have an affinity for younger characters who's journey involves coming to terms with life, hardships, difficulties, childish naivety, and the painful realities of growing up. So based upon that, some of my favorites are:

Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye
Oskar Schell from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close
Adam Farmer from I Am the Cheese

    Other favorites are:

    Hamlet from Hamlet
    Rodya from Crime and Punishment
Lucy Pevensie from Chronicles of Narnia
    Mrs. De Winter from Rebecca

But you only asked for one, so I've gone on enough smile

    Great question!

Nicholas Nickleby from the life and adventures of Nicholas Nickleby by Charles Dickens.

I like the way Dickens wrote his character, Nicholas can be brutish or judgmental and skeptical and at the same time endearing in a way that anyone might have met someone like him in their daily lives.

I quote this line from the book..it says

"Dreams are the bright creatures of poem and legend, who sport on earth in the night season, and melt away in the first beam of the sun, which lights grim care and stern reality on their daily pilgrimage through the world"

    Just Beautiful smile
