   My pen is the first important tool. When I get an idea in my head I have to write. I don't type fast and my memory is short, or crowded, therefore, when I have something in my head I write it down because I write faster than I type.
   If you are looking for where I get ideas, I get those from everywhere. Past experiences, something I hear on TV, a song or I just listen to my heart, especially for my poems. Greg

   My emotions.  I tend to write more when I am feeling depressed or emotional about something. It is a great release for me and I tend to find more creative ways to say things when feeling emotionally pressed.

   My brain, books, and notes. Without your brain the writing is useless, so try to make something witty or creative or descriptive. Books to learn about certain subjects you barely know anything about. Knowing what you write about always impresses and helps gain an audience. And notes are always welcome to plan and put side commentary.

   Wow, great question!  Every writer has a number of tools,both mental and physical, to rely on.  If I had to pick the most important one, however, I would have to say research.  I just can't imagine trying to write coherently without doing a thorough and full search for facts.  I'll be honest, some of my best ideas have come from random searches that pulled up some obscure historical or scientific fact.
     And, for the record, my second most important tool: COFFEE.

   I would have to say my laptop and my search engine.My ideas come from everything,tv,movies,news,emotions....I jot down ideas on my note pad.My next step from there is inspiration.Sometimes I save my ideas as a draft on my unpublished hubpages.But I would still have to say that my most useful tool is my laptop and search engine.

   My heart! If it doesn't feel right in there, it won't be authentic and if it isn't authentic nothing else matters. Great question though, and some fabulous answers, but what else would you expect from this great Hub Pages community?

   My computer, its fast, its effective, it does a spell check for me, I can erase, delete, copy and paste,save and come back later and its still there.

    I find my reaction to  situations is the most useful tool for writing.
    Sometimes I am moved to laughter, sometimes outrage, sometimes compassion, sometimes it's intrigue or frustration, sometimes it's disbelief or curiosity.
    For example when I was in India many years ago I found a magazine article about a royal family that took up residence with its servants and dogs in the first class waiting room of New Delhi railway station for seven years as a protest over their ancestral lands being taken from them.
    This intrigued me and 25 years later I researched to see what had happened to them and wrote a hub about it.
    Meanwhile my frustration at my husband's attachment to the TV remote prompted me to write about marrigage and remotes in a humorous tone while outrage and compassion resulted in hubs on the plight of Tibetans.
    Disbelief and curiosity resulted in a hub on gun ownership in the USA...and so the story goes.
