What makes great poetry?
What do you believe, in a general sense?
Q. What makes great poetry?
A. Getting into your words...and trying your very best to make them have a meaning that others can relate to. Poetry is a great way to make an impact with what you would like to say by using very precise and carefully chosen words. Poetry has been handed down as a form of Art...by many talented people...over the centuries. It has a unique way of telling a tale...or highlighting a point that someone is trying to craft into the most organized of words. A Picture Portrait in the form...of well selected words. For this and many fine examples...Go see some of Pearldiver's works...Cheers, Mate!
I can only speak for what turns me on about poetry: which is that little jump of recognition I feel when I read something of beauty, power and truth as I see it. In a nutshell.
The ability to use words to conjure up imagery and emotion that will entice readers into
the story portrayed; that in turn allows them to relate to the poem within the concept of their own reality, experiences and emotions. I have always found that poetry can motivate and inspire. From childhood onwards my favourite poet has been W.B. Yeats.
To me, a great poem is original, contains interesting and appropriate imagery, and has some sort of structure, rhythm and flow. The language is descriptive, the mood is unique, and It definitely evokes an emotional or intellectual response.
For me it is when a poet can paint pictures on my brain, make me feel, and delight my tongue when read aloud.
Great poetry evokes strong emotions in your readers. It makes a reader stop and think. It's open to different interpretations. It leaves you wanting more.
What everybody else said ... and (for my personally) rhyme and rhythm. It isn't necessary but it is what often defines poetry/ makes it fun to read and write.

I have some real issues writing poetry. I love reading it and I would love to write it beyond a second grade level, but I keep getting stuck and it never conveys what I originally had planned. What do you find helpful? Is it just some people don't have a poetic bone in their body?

I have never written poetry before I have published my very first poem and I am not sure that I have written poetry now. When it comes to poetry I am clueless as to what makes something a poem and what prevents it from being a poem. Can some one help me out before I make a complete twit of...
