There are over 1.5 million words in English Language . It expands daily as English adapts,borrows, steals, expands and assimilates. However, the average adult vocabulary could be 20000 or less. A lot of the words Are highly technical and may not be used commonly.
The NYTimes only uses around 1200 words in general and this is enough to get by! Learning new words hits a plateau around mid twenties unless one reads, writes, or develops a profession with a brand new technical vocabulary.
