Why do we say something is out of whack? What is a whack?
In the UK we say out of 'bonk', or, out of 'kilter'. bonk and kilter are used to refer to balance, true, alignment, so presumably 'whack' means the same.
Whack used in this sentence means that something is out of the norm. It looks weird or crazy. Something's just not right about it if it's out of whack. It doesn't fit what's expected and falls out of the usual or ordinary concept. It's not acceptable the way it is. This is my definition for "out of whack".
I just love the saying: "When you find that you are out of whack,.... get more whack..."
