as funny and stupid as this may sound, I find that my phone can be the best tool I have as a writer simply due to the fact that you can save drafts of messages. I was in a poetry class a few years back and i wrote an entire poem on my phone while I was going for a walk. Since then, I've used the "Drafts" box of my text messaging as a place to store ideas, images, or inspirations that I have when I'm not near my laptop or notebook.
I also talk to myself when I'm brainstorming. I have to be alone or it just doesn't work as well. I'll either pace around my living room or walk around the block and just talk through any and all ideas that are bouncing around in my head. It really helps me pick out the dumb or dead end ideas and occasionally results in new, better ideas that I wouldn't have been able to think of if I hadn't talked things through out loud.
