What has been your favorite book to read in 2012?
I host a book club and am looking for popular suggestions for books to read over the next few months.
So far we have read Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, Major Pettigrew's Last Stand, Water For Elephants, Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet.
Any suggestions of other good books?
The Help by Kathryn Stockett. A Separate Peace by John Knowles.
If your book club read those, I can dig around some more in my books.
Great choices so far! I loved Major Pettigrew's Last Stand! Have you read "The Elegance of the Hedgehog" or "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night?" They are good book club choices. The best book I've read this year so far is "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" by Jonathon Safran Foer, although I've heard the movie does not live up to the book. "On Beauty" by Zadie Smith was fantastic too.
The Book Thief was making the rounds a few years ago and is an excellent read.
The Alchemist by Coelho would be interesting to discuss, IMO.
Bones of Faerie: Totally different than your other reads and a YA to boot. But it could make for some good discussion and it's a quick read. It's a coming of age quest that falls somewhere between fantasy and dystopian.
If you want a tear jerker and like animals: A Dog's Purpose and/or The Art of Racing in the Rain.
Doc (about Doc Holliday)
The Calligrapher's Daughter: I appreciated learning about this period of history.
You could also go with a book club classic like The Giver (which not a lot of adults revisit but can be appreciated on a different level as an adult, and the author is adding a 4th book to the series)
Sounds strange, but so far this year, I really enjoyed reading the "Great Gatsby". I had to read it for English Lit class, and I read it in an afternoon! Admittedly, it started out a bit slow at first, but I then really got into it. It encouraged me to find out more about the era it was set in, and what life was like back then. Turns out, when I went to New York last summer, I had gone to some of the key places mentioned in the book! (the Valley of Ashes is apparently now in Corona Park in Flushing, Queens)
I definitely enjoyed it, and I've watched the movie with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow. I'm also looking forward to the movie coming out in December with Leo DiCaprio as Gatsby!
I am reading "Calico Joe" by John Grisham, but I just read "Page A-1" by Cliff Anthony. If anyone here worked in community journalism before the fall of the newspaper industry, this is the perfect book!!
