How would you deal with plagiarism done against you?

Suppose you're a fiction writer and you publish your work in hubpages. Then one day you find your story published under some other author's name, in some other site, blog or hard copy magazine/book. What actions will you take? Or will you just let it go, let it flow and quote Disney - "I can innovate faster than you can imitate" ?

Say it's not a site, but a hard copy magazine or book? What then?

I believe going straight to the other "author" will produce no favorable results for the original author. I believe I would get a lawyer and go straight to the publisher.

From Wendy Boswell :website....Try to find a sentence in your articles that either has a spelling error or formed using a unique combination of words that people haven't used before.
The easiest approach will to send a polite email to the blogger requesting him to remove the article from his blog or site.
Run a WhoIs lookup (whois.net/)on the web domain name to find the domain registrar and the name of the web hosting company in order to register a complaint about copied content.

Many people don't want to deal with these charges, and will remove the said article immediately...hope this helps...

I would just feel good seeing that someone loved my work so much that ended up stealing and publishing it under his/her own name. Plus, yes, that would prove to me the lack of original inspiration and idea frame of their side, the absence of respect towards themselves and literature generally. I would not really let it go, I like the truth and i stand up for it, whether it relates to me or to someone else. Letting it go would lead to nowhere. What is written has to be signed by the one that wrote it.

As a professional journalist, I can tell you that there's not a whole heck of a lot you can do unless you have deep pockets and can find a copyright lawyer. Copyright lawyers are not as prevalent as you might think, and they want big retainers to even start the process -- if you can get them to accept the case. If you have any website recourse, it would be advisable to pursue that avenue first.
