The True Blood series. The female character never seems to stay with one guy. It's depressing and irritating.

I remember when I stopped reading VC Andrews books... didn't seem to matter what series you read, it was always the same creepy incestual story lines.. ugh!

This is only going to be half an answer to your question because I don't want to denigrate an author whose writing I've enjoyed for a long time. Therefore, I won't give the author's name or what the series is about.

What I want to describe is what made me angry when I bought this author's most recent book and finished reading it.  It ended with a cliffhanger, designed to get the reader to buy and read the next in the series to discover what happened.  I felt like this was a cheap trick, and it will have the opposite effect on me. I WON'T buy or read the next one.  I'll just imagine my own ending!

A hardcover novel isn't cheap these days--especially one by an established author with a big following. There was nothing in the blurb to indicate this novel would end in such a way that the words "to be continued" would be in order.

I've seen reviews of this book (very good), and the author continues to win award after award, so I may be the only reader who felt cheated.

Jean M. Auel's "Clan of the Cave Bear series". The first book was one of my all time favorites, and the next couple of books in the series were okay but for me they began to drift away from the plot of the original. I could barely finish the fourth and have never bothered with the fifth. I always expected, "Ayla" to one day see her son again and to have some kind of interaction with her former people, but that never happened, nor did it appear that Jean intended to take it in that direction, so...i lost interest.

I too really loved the first book too, but I only started the second book and never finished it... now I know that I don't need to bother, lol. My dad's favourite was the Mammoth Hunters, he never bothered to read the others.

Wayne, I've read reviews a number of times which stated that the later books in the series were not nearly as good.

A friend gave me a copy of "50 Shades of Gray" after she had finished reading it. Not my sort of book at all - but thought I would give it a try. I got about half way through and then actually threw it in the bin because I thought it was such rubbish! Needless to say I didn't bother with the sequels smile It was a bestseller here in England last year, and one of the most hyped and talked about books of the time, so I guess lots of people must have liked it. I just thought it was trashy, the characters were unlikeable and unrealistic and the story was lame.

Fifty Shades...I bought it because of all the hype but really, one was enough!  I felt I knew enough about the 'plot' and 'characters' to guess where it was all heading, and it just wasn't compelling enough.  Must also say that I stopped after Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - having seen the TV trilogy I don't regret it either, just couldn't see that the two follow-ups were anything like as interesting.
