   the absence of light is the technical answer. I would say also say that creatively it might be the opposite of light. You could say it is the color of the night without moon or stars. Or perhaps the color of the darkest part of our soul if you were being poetic.

   Actually, it's  the total absorbing of light which equals the frequency translation of said color; yay for Black!

   Scientifically:
   It is the total absence of electromagnetic radiation visible to the human eye.
   
   Creatively:
   It is the color of loneliness, elegance, and depth. The color of despair and the color of high fashion. The color of the abyss. The color of eternity. The color of wealth and the color of poverty. The color of the center of the human eye, which is the window to the soul. The color of warmth and comfort, and the color of fear and hatred. It is the color of hope and of shame. It is the color of the night sky, interrupted by brilliant white stars and planets, and the color of the deepest ocean teeming with dark life. It is the color of the cave, hiding the brilliance of its marvels. It is the universal color upon which all others are painted. It is there in the background, hiding in the corners. It is the color of infinite contrasts without intentionally being so.
