How do you determine how much to charge for an hourly rate for a freelance writing gig?
I've been offered a job to write 1-3 articles monthly. They've never worked with a freelance writer and I've never been offered a paying job so neither of us know what is fair. It requires research for each article, so we agreed that an hourly rate, rather than charging per article is fair but I'm still not sure how much I should charge.
that depends, what word count do they want? How much research is required - light or extensive? How long do you think it will take you to write them? When I started, I wrote 500 words articles for about $15. they were light on research and took me an hour or less. Now that I'm established I make about $20 or so for a 500-600 word article, but I write in my niches and only seek clients in those genres - so I am pretty fast.
It's confusing at first, but it depends a great deal on your experience, not only writing, but also in the subject area you are writing about. For me, I had work experience in those genres so I can charge more.
I would charge by the word. That is how I've always been paid for freelance articles. Then they can set a word-length to fit their budget. I sure would not do a 500-word article for less than $100 which is very low at .20/word. But you say you are just starting out.
I usually charge per word rather than per hour. But to be honest, per hour might work better if there's a lot of research involved. I've charged as low as $25 for a 500 word article, thinking it would take me less than an hour, and ended up spending 3 hours on it. Usually clients have a set budget to work with though. Has this client not mentioned what their budget is?
Good on you Lisa, I reckon somewhere between 20/30 dollars is a fair price, especially starting out..cheers

How much is reasonable for a freelance writer to be paid per word?I'm applying to a Craigslist ad, and it asks how much I want per word. Anyone know the going rate?

It is against HubPages' rules to inquire about other writer's monthly payments.

Do you track both your income from writing and how much time you put into it? If you do, do you have a minimum hourly rate that you target?

I think our economy needs to realize the power of writers. Most writers work off commission. I understand that every piece of work will not be helpful to a business. But i feel that it will open a bunch of jobs for people who love there line of work. Also we could inspire newcomers and bring back...

Are there any researchers here on Hubpages? What is your standard rate?If you are a researcher what do you charge? I am about to do a job but I worked with the client before. The hourly rate I set was good but based on the amount of time to put in, the cost was out of his reach. So I agreed to set...
