This may be a dumb question but...can gasoline fires be extinguished with, say, rain?
This question is actually for a story I'm writing. Something in the story will be soaked with gasoline and lit on fire in the midst of hurricane rain. Would the item's fire be extinguished? I've heard water simply spreads the gasoline since it is denser than water. But I am not too sure. Any opinions?
Gasoline is lighter then water, so if its more gasolin then water can actually help growing fire. But as you mentioned rain water, it sprinkles from the top and allows surrounding areas to get wet too so yes it will eventually extinguish fire.
I agree with ktnpti. A small gasoline flam, such as a match, can easily be extinguished with water. However, gasoline floating on water will only be extinguished until more water is applied to the flame from above, or the amount of gasoline present is consumed in the fire. It that happens, the fire extinguishes itself. A gasoline fire with a continuing source of fuel will only be extinguished when either the supply of gasoline is stopped or the flame is deprived of oxygen.

When I first became a part of HubPages I was excited and enthusiast about being able to write and have others read my offerings and perhaps even get paid. Now—it’s a struggle to interject the occasional comment in a forum let alone create a well-written hub. I have become totally disenchanted and...

I see the use of signs, which we as mankind is quite capable of , we use animals to that advantage and show all the necessary patience and love to bring them to that state that we feel they are capable of. But when it comes to humans as ourselves,,who we feel have missed that norm. He is so...

Hypothetical question. As the old saying goes if a tree falls in the woods yet nobody is around then does it truly make a sound if nobody is around to hear it? Similar question here. If people always accuse you of being dumb, and always dismiss whatever facts you...

As a postal truck driver I was driving down the street with a 5-ton truck, full of mail heading for the sorting plant. I looked in my mirrors and noticed smoke rising up over top my truck, so I pulled over to the curb. Sure enough the truck was on fire. I grabbed my fire extinguisher and rushed to...

My "dumb" question is: Do we steam the pudding in the oven or on top of the stove? Thanks, Wil
