Poetry is important because it can allow the human spirit to soar above the mundane and the everyday. In short it is freedom, a ride on the imagination into worlds waiting to be discovered and explored. As humans we communicate and understand mostly through language, we survive and thrive as biological creatures through the power of speech (and symbol, gesture and sign). Poetry is feeling metamorphosed into selected language and shaped on page and from mouth to convey the deepest, the most profound of feelings. It can take you into the darkest and lightest niches of life; you go with it, hoping to grasp the poet's meaning, or simply bathe in the texture and flow of syllable and sentence. In the end literal meaning or technical admiration isn't the final destination - the emotions have to be involved finally.
