In many ways it was the last decade where most people trusted the government and believed the country was living on high moral ground.
Once the 60s arrived with The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Hippies, the drug culture, Vietnam protests, assassinations of JFK, MLK, RFK, and Malcom X, The Manson Family, "The Free Love Movement" and cohabitating, "Never trust anyone over 30!" and "Make love not war."
Lots of folks look back the 1950s as the last decade of innocence.
Many folks look back on the 50s with "rose colored" glasses.
However in reality the Jim Crow segregation laws were still in effect, interracial marriage was against the law in a lot of states until the Supreme Court struck those laws down in 1967.
The first Playboy Magazine issue came out in 1953, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a bus which lead to blacks boycotting buses for a while. Mobsters like the Gambino Family ran things.
We'd later learn about Katharine Hepburn’s 25-year love affair with Spencer Tracy who was married the whole time, Singe Eddie Fisher left his wife Debbie Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor whom he was having an affair with. In 1957 rock & roll singer Jerry Lee Lewis, 22 married his (13) year old cousin, Myra Brown while he was still married to his second wife!
The "Cold War" between the U.S. and Russia was still a major concern, The Korean War, 1950–1953, and there were the early 1950s, cigarette ads making false statements: "For Digestion's Sake Smoke Camels!", "Smoke a Lucky to Feel Your Level Best" and going back to1931 advertisement featuring Edmund Lowe, who was a prolific actor at the time said: "I Protect My Voice With Luckies." The public was being lied to and believing all of it!
In retrospect the 1950s was the last decade of people being naïve! Today with all the social media and 24 hour news channels along with the Internet it's more difficult to avoid seeing or hearing about things.
