I would say it is an art.  An art is something that cannot be objectively evaluated.

With all art, there are different levels of skill.  And, since the reaction to art is subjective, there will be great differences in opinion about an artist's (poet's) work.  A consensus or not will determine fame and fortune.

I consider writing Poems to be an Art because there is an element of creativity in it.

Poems can be used to release emotions or can be even be written for people, but it's the "putting it together" that brings about the Art.

    Regards.

Yes, writing poems is a real art. It is not simply 'emotions gushing out'. But it is skill and craftsmanship with words.

The great drawback with most poetry today is that it is simply the pouring out of feelings in a maudlin and reckless way. The poet is a 'wordsmith' who carefully chooses his words to master his emotions and transmute them to a higher level. There has to be control and (as I said) craftsmanship.

There is a creative art to writing poems. You can either write prose or rhyme. I try to always write my poems from my heart. Writing is a way to release our emotions as well.

Of Course It Is...! When done with the best of your abilities and directed at an idea that you want to portray (whether the idea is made clear or hidden with in your own personal meaning). A Poem can say things with great imagination and with great attention-getting abilities...i.e. Art! In its purest sense.

Perhaps Poetry is even better then most media forms that are out there today. It only depends on how interested the person is in the Poetry that they read. Art is where you find it. Artist seek to express their ideas...in the form of their own choosing. Some use plaster of paris and a kiln, some carve wood and stone, some use colors on canvas, and some use words! Hooray...for the Artist who expresses their ideas in any media form!
