Would it be a mistake to post the whole novel on hubpages if you were thinking of trying to get...

it published? If not how much is ok? Or should it not be posted at all?

I think you should post teaser Hubs for your book rather than posting the entire thing. Nobody will pay for something they can get for free.

However, if you create buzz for your book with teaser Hubs, then a publisher may be more willing to take your book because you can show them there is an eager market waiting for it.

    Good luck.

I would say that this would not be the best forum for that. Better to market the novel through traditional means. Down the road, after you've tried all avenues, perhaps then publishing the novel in a forum like this might at least satisfy your urge to get it out.

I'm dubious about you posting any of it at all.

The issue with posting it here or anywhere else, is that publishers might see it as 'self publishing' and I have read nothing but bad reports on that.

Do take your time before you decide whether to post it and research what may be expected of you or your work by publishing houses and agents first so that you have a better understanding of the mechanics of being signed by publishers.

I'm publishing mine here. The worst that could happen is nobody reads it.

The mediocre thing to happen is a publisher deciding to sign you, in which case you take down the novel from hubpages.com

The best thing to happen is for someone to steal your idea, so you can sue them smile

Read my hubs sometime. I put out my best stuff.

Thanks for all of the good advice. Unfortunately, I have already posted parts of the story. Hopefully, what I have posted is like a teaser. Would you mind taking a look (The Romantic Strangler) and let me know what you think?

No, I'd say it wouldn't be a good idea.  A traditional publisher may not publish it if they found out, based on some discussion of this recently on a Website Examiner hub.

Also, while your exact words would be protected by copyright, your 'ideas' your 'characterizations' your .....everything intangible could easily be taken from you, quite legally, and put in someone else's novel.  Plots, so far as I know, are not copyright protected.

You probably realize that there are around 7,000,000,000 people in the world of whom around half think that they can or should write a book.   Take off about seven of those zeroes and you have an idea of how many publishers there are out there (and I'm being over-optimistic here, I suspect)

I don't know you.   You might be one in a hundred thousand and have a book the publishers will snap up.   You'll have to ask yourself that one.

Some great responses below.   For my few cents worth: Put the Intro on Hubpages and ask if anyone would like to you to place Chapter One on.  From the responses, you'll know whether it's worth putting more on.

As for the publishing houses, good luck.  And watch out for the scams.

While feedback can be really good, I would say that no, you shouldn't publish the whole thing on hubpages. From what I've read of your work so far, you aren't that far from publication. Get everything in order and start submitting it to agents/publishers. The only scenario I would suggest being okay to publish on Hubpages would be if it was a story/book you never intended to publish.
