What kind of diseases cause Kidney failure?

I am writing a novel where the main character is going through a medical emergancy that requires her to have a kidney transplant, I am wondering two things specifically, the first is what kind of emergancy can it be, and the second if I want her to have a set amount of time 6-9 months in which to recieve the transplant which condition would best fit in those perameters. Thank You

Diabetes for all I know destroys the kidneys.
    Stage 4 at least.
    Good luck with your book.

    trauma

    diabetes
a single dose of motrin or alleve
    statin therapy
in addition to things already mentioned

there is no set amount of time in which to receive a transplant in any kind of renal failure. they all respond to dialysis - hemo or peritoneal.
