It may effect the Hub score a bit but I don't think it's a problem.  Eitherway, good luck in the contest!

I recently had the same problem with a short story that i had posted. the best way to resolve this for yourself is to contact the competition and ask...

I did that, and was thankfully told that because i had never submitted my short story for approval, that it was fine to enter...as if hub pages were a blog smile Which was GREAT!

    good luck with the competition!

If you wrote the poem.. effectively you own both the poem and the copyright to the work. Where you publish your work is up to you, but do not (if you are serious about your poetry) sign away your rights to your work.  Always read the TOS of every site that you contribute to, to ensure that you do not give away your rights unwittingly.
Now, in regard to your concern here..
You may well be pinged for duplicate content at HP and within the Search Engines and you may not.  In such cases the site at where the works were first published is deemed to be the original publishing party and as such can (though for only occasional breaches often don't) endorse a points penalty and alike for such.  Entering in poetry comps, is used a lot as a site drawcard, merely to gain site content and for the unsuspecting... they must consider which site best supports their objectives.
So.. Good Luck with your poem... but do keep in mind that Duplicate Copy is Not Original Copy and as such carries with it a variety of penalties.  Now if you change the poem to 'not be seen' as such....
You choose - you do whatever is best for YOU - Ethically and professionally and don't second-guess your decisions!
Write up a storm and hold it within the words of your poems.

Poetry, short stories, and any work of fiction have something called "First rights". This can be first world printed rights or first world electronic rights. This is the right an organization is most interested in purchasing, as it means the work has never been published anywhere else before. Most magazines will not consider a story unless the first rights are still intact. By putting your poem up on Hubpages first, you've expended the first rights. But, if you take it down before anyone in that competition looks for duplicates, you can probably get away with it. I've done the same a few times before. No one cares as long as the Hubpages copy is taken down before the other one goes live.

Thank you alll......erm... I hae submitted it already so if they refuse it I don't mind I will just try a different poem next time. I entered one of my poems because of their 'theme' and it fits perfect. I refuse to take it of hubs though because here its where it began smile

hmm ...It is MY own work so I guess I own it .

I just hope I dont get into some kind of trouble for it,penalty?!
crikey !! ...well I will know soon enough

someone mentioned duplicte cannot be the original, but it is MINE ! so the way i see this is if i was the one to write it in MY OWN WORDS It is my original?! i dont know..

i just love to write ..... thats all sad
