You can use both and may as well use both. But in most cases the majority of sales will be through kindle. In my case by about 50:1
There are pros and cons to both. KDP is very strict on content and even if you posted it on your website they will still card you saying the story is floating around online. I have not had a lot of experience with Smashwords but you should be careful how you format your book. They are very picky with the premium catalog.
I agree with psyceskinner about using both. Smashwords does distribute to Kindle but I heard it's very fussy so publishing directly to KDP is best. I'll let you know more once I have my next book published.
