I just listened (9/12/15) this afternoon to a PRI program featuring why writers write by a Nobel Prize winner from Afghanistan, self-publishing by a phenomenally successful writer who does a novel a year and made himself successful beyond his wildest dream while he and his wife lived simply in a 750 sq. ft. home, and comments on the dangers posed by schools which don't encourage good reading and competent writing.
If you can find it by searching on the web, do so and listen. It will be worth your time. I guarantee it.
