    IF PROVIDENCE WILL

    If perchance providence strikes
and her palms, reddened with approval,
her face smeared with joy's blood,
her bosom, ascending toward the heavens
and by the heartless thumps of her heart's thump,
come tomorrow, lover, we shall be together.

    If perchance providence permits
and her grace, waiting to be freed,
her eyes captured by mercy's beauty,
her body, eclipsed by the sweetness of dance
and by the stubbornness of her soul's child,
come tomorrow, lover, we shall be together.

    If perchance providence submits
and her back, pressed against the earth,
her voice subdued in her lover's,
her gates giving up the floods,
and by the whips of her absolute contentment,
come tomorrow, lover, we shall be together.

If by tomorrow, lover, we be not together,
    weep not, fear not,
and as for her portions that cannot be hindered,
    weep not, fear not,
for they, soon, shall be without defense.
And for providence who, in time, shall well
be advanced in age, and the strengths of her belly dispersed,
    whatever she wills shall be.
