I asked about placing poetry in hubs and was advised to try it here first so here goes.. I wrote this in 01 but just now finished revising. Kids slow me down a lot hehehe.
How old is the tree, you ask?
I count the circles of its body
the kite strings and shoelaces
that dangle from the branches,
hearts and initials tattooed in its flesh,
tire swings and shoelaces, the number of nights
you climbed down those braches and ran off
to God knows where.
When you ask of the universe, I count
the constellations I have taught you, materials
the moon has been made of, stars we've wished upon
the prayers we've sent soaring
into the charcoal of the night : their tail ends
bright and unforgettable, still hanging
in the sky unanswered.
My age? There are all these lines
that circle my eyes. Inches of heels
I've ground to a pulp, searching for you
through back alleys and shopping malls. I count
the tears congealed on pillowslips, the laughter
I've pickled between the pages of scrapbooks,
skins you've wriggled out of and left to dry
each time you became a stranger.
I count the hairs of your father's head,
the ones he's scooped by handfuls
from sink and bathtub
to save some semblance of himself. The times
he's sat speechless and trembling, older
on the edge of our bed; worn out
from those countless arguments.
All those years I've lost track of,
when days and meals
rolled into one another like box cars
on a motionless train I idled in front of
until they didn't matter anymore
and I became content with the lack of movement,
frightened of what would happen
when that train chuffed out of the intersection
and I couldn't remember where I'd been going.
oh my gosh
this about made me weep.
you need to turn this into a hub
(shaking head @ all the wonderfulness here at HubPages)
I agree. This is absolutely beautiful....! Hope you'll turn it into a hub soon....
