May We Keep Our Green and Pleasant Land, Please?

Till We Have Built Jerusalem

In Englands´Green and Pleasant Land.

Words by William Blake

A green and pleasant land, this country once was called,

Green it is, mountains, valleys, and ancient castle walls,

Yet pleasant land is failing us,

The human element forges in,

To this green and pleasant land.

Though woods and forests hold no terror

of grisly bears or tigers,

The terror comes from man himself

In this green and pleasant land

The landfills full of rubbish, are quickly filling up.

The Oceans being poisoned , When will man give up?

Give in and realise,........

Unless we love this land and show it some respect,

and work as one, hand in hand,

there´ll be no more,

A green and pleasant land.

A wasteland fit for no life...is what we´ll end up with.

It´s overtime, way past the time,

that we all should give,

As much as we can manage.

We can only do our best, But our BEST we have to do,

before we take a rest.

And look again at what we have,

in this green and pleasant land.

Great hub, its always nice to meet a like-minded person here on Hubpages. I despair for our so called green and pleasant land, I'm noticing more and more housing developments everywhere I go. How long will it be before the whole country is paved over. Thank you very much for sharing. Voted up and shared.

I do so agree with the sentiments expressed in your poem. I have the privilege of living in a beautiful place - but so many people seem blind to their surroundings. Some people take no care - throwing rubbish from cars, etc. It will soon spoil things for us all.

Beautiful Pictures Dim that evoke much thought to preserving the wonders of this earth, one of my own hearts desires. It is so sad... it is a very serious issue and you have brought it to the front of the line..Thank you dear friend.

Beautiful pictures. I was thinking of taking pictures of the trash along the highway. They are slow to cleaning everything up around here this year. We pick up the few things we can but we can't get it all. Great Hub voted up.

Hi JKenny,

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot (The big yellow taxi by Joni Mitchell) Before your time, that song, I imagine, but she sure had the right idea of what was about to happen.

Loved your comment. Thank you very much

Hello 2patricias

Thank you so much for the comment. As a child in the 1950s I would never have been allowed to throw even a tiny sweet wrapper out of a car window. Mum always had a bag for all the rubbish as we went on our way anywhere.

Great to meet you on hubpages. Take care.

Hi moonlake, What a lovely name.!

It´s sad that people drop trash anywhere and everywhere.

At least you are doing what you can, as I try to.

Take care.

Yes indeed you've nailed the problem so keenly. It's man's battles and greed that is defrauding us all of the green. Our cities are populating with political woe from all types of immigrants and foreigners who are exploding in droves.

Man is tossing it's garbage from sea to sea and along with it comes war, terror, crime and bloodshed in our streets. Mother Nature is reclaiming her rightful place on her dying planet and causing man to fall to his knees.

Time will tell, but certainty is at our doorsteps. Man will pay for taking away the beauty of the color green and turning it grey and black where only Hell resides. Let's turn our damage around and reap the benefits and rewards or else be scattered and destroyed by our maker and creator of this place we call home.

Beautiful verses and, oh, so true. Humans must first, care about our planet, then do everything each as an individual can do toward preserving our "green and pleasant land" no matter where it is on the sphere. It's difficult for individuals to fight back against corporations (which are responsible for much of the toxic waste), but we must make every effort (both as individuals and in groups with clout) if our land is to survive.

Thanks for a lovely poem and fitting tribute to the upcoming Earth Day.
