Again and Again

Again and Again

Uprooted upon a mantle in time,
I took hold, tightly gripping the moist dirt,
And watched you grow old and die, again and again.
It starts, sparse, and soon grows lush and leafy,
And becomes herbal with rosemary, mint and sage.
I continue to tower in height and girth,
Slowly aging while you work on making history.
And I see it all, again and again.
You begin to molt, shedding your brown skin,
Releasing rotting toxins in the air.
It’s all consumed, somehow, by various entities.
At times, I released my energy, pushed it away,
Beyond where I could ever see my progeny grow.
I am nothing but a mere observer of eternity,
Until my one-time tenants become my predators.
Their sharp minds develop sharp tools.
I was once useful for so many things, watching them
Grow, live, die, again and again.
But it was also me, who grew, lived and died,
Again and again.

This in response to Leni Sand's Personification Challenge/Exercise. :) It's a bit rough, as I didn't revise that much, but I liked that feeling because it had to do with nature.

Reminds me of "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. A book I gave to each of my children upon graduation.

Very nice.
