  • Book 2, The Valley of Horses, Ayla is living on her own in a valley, accompanied with the foal and cave lion whom she tamed. Whilst Ayla is experiencing life on her own, and desiring to meet her own people (Cro-magnons), her wish is on the way to be fulfilled: handsome and adventurous Jondalar and his brother Thonolan are on a journey, travelling to gain new experiences. Thonolan wants to follow a river Danube; Jondalar is accompanying him because he doesn't want to marry his ex-girlfriend . At the end, she has to choose between Ranek who offers her pleasent life in the Mamutoi tribe who highly respect her and her talents and Jondalar, who offers her unknown future somewhere far in the Ice Age Europe.
  • Book 4 , The Plains of Passage. where Ayla and Jondalar travel through the Ice Age Europe while meeting various human tribes and learning their customs.  They are on the way back to Jondalar´s homeland.
  • Book 5, The Shelters of Stone, Jondalar brought Ayla back to his tribe, and Ayla recognizes Ayla gives birth to her daughter, Jonayla. Ayla is adjusting to the new life, very far from her home. Altough she is finally with "her own people", her past life with Neanderthals (especially the fact she had the son with the member of her old tribe) causes her new challenges.
  • Book 6 will be called The Land of the Painted Caves, and is due to be published, it speaks about further challenges in Ayla`s life while living with Jondalar´s people, taking care about her daughter and receiving further spiritual training that will give her important position in her new tribe. .

Magic of Jane M Auels Novels

Maybe the biggest value of Jane Auel´s book is way how she described our ancestors - they are definitely not wild creatures with low intelligence, on the contrary: they are very much alike us today, except they live in different life-circumstances and due to that they face different survival challenges.

Jane M Auel also has done her very best to present similarities and differences between Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons on the way we can easily relate to the both to them. Her approach is based on her many years extensive research of the newest archaeological findings that include anthropological and forensic scientific findings as well. In her novels she bridged and healed more prejudices people have about Neanderthals then any of human scientists have done.

Many people have very big problem to accept prehistoric human ancestors, because of deep inner fears and shame that they could be animal-like. It is not healthy for the future of one intelligent race to deny the part of its past, especially the part on which we can be only proud of. While knowing that we are beings who need myths and symbols to help us overcome deep prejudices and fears, Jane M Auel is using powerful story-telling healing tools to lead our minds on the level where we can easily and unconditionally resonate with the truths about our ancestors, stop denial and start to accept them with love, respect and gratitude. This is certainly the highest ethical value of her novels and the very good reason why people love them so much, and why anyone should read them . This certainly explains the secret why readers patiently wait for so many years for new book to be published - Auel´s novels created timeless love for humanity that clearly whispers through her words.

Hi Tatjana,

I enjoyed the first three in the series but didn't realize any followed... Auel's death was untimely and disappointing. Her co-writer finished the third epic tale after her death,(if i'm not mistaken)

I can see the Ayla in you Tatjana! Ha! :)

This is great, thank you for the news- will look for it at book shops. Who is publishing under her name now?

Love and peace sent your way my "Pretty Paleo-Lady"... greg z :)

Hehe Thank you for the nice compliments Gino.

There were rumors about Áuel´s death every now and on, but she is still very alive, has 15 granchildren, and going to publish her last novel.

Thank you for this great article on Jane Auel's series. I've read only the first two but enjoyed them very much. What impressed me was the research and very plausible conclusions she reached. Storytelling is a compelling art and you have done it justice here. You have prompted me to get to the library again :)

Incredible I bought the 'The Valley of Horses' by sheer chance and never heard of her before. I just finished reading it because it is big book. She is absolutely fantastic to say the least. To be able to write about that period is incredible and does it so descriptive. I am absolute shocked. She really is a genius.

Thank you for your review of her books and tribute to a great writer. When I read your hub I also thought that you have the same style as Jean M Auel, so two people can't be wrong.

I'd like to comment if I could? I am a fan of JEAN M. AUEL. No doubt about it. I have read, and listened to all of her books more than once. I love the fact that she puts the reader exactly where she wants you to go; Which is in pre-historic Europe right after the ice age, or very close to after. Although there is snow, ice, and ice shelves, and even in THE PLAINS OF PASSAGE we read of their journey home, where they cross a great ice ocean (or part of the ocean), I don't believe she ever mentions exactly WHEN in time they are. Yes, during the ICE AGE, or very close to it (which as I said I believe just after), but not the exact time. Around that time period. Exact estimates for that time in history is spotty at best. The only way we will ever know is to go back there. Don't think we'll see that in our life-time guys. But to get back to it, I love Jean Auel. I only have one question really. Was there really that much sex going on? Don't get me wrong, I'm no prude by a long shot, but come on, really? To further the line, so it doesn't stop, yes. But really that much. I don't know. Just the hint of sex would have been enough in some of her scenes. Her details were almost pornographic. PLEASE tell me I'm wrong. I'd really like to have an explanation. And is the last book going to go through the same thing? I'll buy it, don't you worry. But, is there a reason for it?

Roger

Hehe Slowspokevoyager, too much sex? Well, to be honest I just don´t read that descriptions. This is not what I am interested in, after I read it first several, for me is enough--- but some of my friends would not agree with me. This is matter of personal taste - beauty of the books is that we can easily skip when we find something what is too much for us. Sex sales everything, maybe the author got suggestion from publisher to put such chapters in the novels?

I saw the Clan of the care bear movie, which was awesome. And I read the valley of the horses which was even better. I didnt even realize that the mammoth hunters was by the same author. Several of those books i stole from my dad's bookshelf in middle school to read. Ayla is such a fascinating character who shows you how much simple determination and imagination can do.

Read her first three books some years ago, and she was certainly a breakthrough writer. Thanks for bringing her back to my attention.

Excellent.!!!! Like many others, I have eagerly anticipated the release of every "next edition" in her Earth's Children series, since I first read "The Clan of The Cave Bear".

Her background research into every aspect of life at the times has added immensely to the storyline of the series.

As for the sex, I would not be here today if my cave dwelling ancestors did not find some enjoyment in snuggling beneath the furs on a frosty winter's evening.

Thanks for sharing, I will check out your other related hubs...

I didn't like the Plains of Passage. I think each but was a little bit worse than the one before. But even though only the first two were really fantastic, I learned so much from all four that I read.
