Jennifer Weiner:Always A Must Read

Jennifer Weiner is one of my very favorite authors. I've heard her work described as "Chick Lit" and I guess that fits. In my opinion, though, it's so much more. She writes with such wit and humor, it is impossible to not love (or hate) her characters. I found her completely by accident while wandering in the bookstore one day. The first book I read by her was actually the second she'd written, In Her Shoes. It's a story about two sisters who have nothing in common but their shoe size. Rose Feller is the older sister. She's the responsible one, the dependable one, the one her sister always takes advantage of. Maggie is the wild child, the little sister. She's beautiful, believes that her big break is always right around the corner and her life is a complete mess. Rose is determined to save her little sister by fixing her life. Maggie is intent on getting Rose to be more fashionable and moisturize. I absolutely loved this book. I went out and found Weiner's debut, Good In Bed, as soon as I could. Yes, I was completely hooked.

Jennifer Weiner was born in Louisiana, but she actually spent most of her childhood in Connecticut.  She earned her bachelor of arts summa cum laude in English from Princeton University in 1991.  After college, she became a cub reporter for the daily newspaper of State College in Pennsylvania.  From there she moved on to the Lexington Herald-Leader and then to the Philadelphia Inquirer.  She worked as a journalist until Good In Bed was published in 2001.  2002's, In Her Shoes was made into a major motion picture starring Toni Collette, Cameron Diaz and Shirley MacLaine.  (More about that in a future hub) Weiner's published four more novels and a collection of short stories since.  Her protagonists are smart, funny women who never fail to spark my interest in their stories.

My Favorite Book by Jennifer Weiner-Good In Bed

My favorite book by Jennifer Weiner is her first, Good In Bed. The main character, Cannie Shapiro is a plus-sized woman living in what feels like a size 2 world. Her career as a journalist is moving along fine, she just wishes it had moved further along. She has a screenplay she's written that she's tried to get noticed to no avail. Her mother just came out of the closet and her father is a vacant spot in her life. She tells her long-time boyfriend she thinks they need to take a break and he retaliates by telling the world that she's fat in a magazine segment he writes. This begins a whirlwind of events that completely changes her life forever. It's an amazing story, and a very easy read, especially for anyone who's ever felt uncomfortable in their own body. It's all about loving yourself and knowing who's really important in your life. I tell everyone I know they should read this book, man or woman. I think it can teach us a lot about how we perceive ourselves and others around us. It also shows us that the smallest change can sometimes bring about the biggest reward.

Chick lit. Hmmm. What was Jane Austen considered in her time? Was she read mostly by men, I wonder? Hmmm. Weiner seems intiguing by your discription. I think I'll check out her work! :)

I know a few men who've read her work and enjoyed it. :) I hate the labels we put on books these days. She's a big supporter of the "chick lit" label, though. She says it's about more than just shoes and shopping. Her work gets lumped in there a lot so I thought I'd slip it in there. :)

Hi Lissa, There's a very popular writer of chick lit here in Ireland who once said that when a man writes of familial, domestic dramas it's called Chekovian and when a woman does it's chick lit. As a fan of both, I'm with you, nevermind the label just read the books. :0)

She is a genius. And my favorite book by her is also Good in Bed. It is brilliant. Try the sequel, "Certain Girls" you'll love it.

I loved the movie, In Her Shoes and liked the book. I included these two in my HUB:

Books to Movies: Three Great Screen Adaptations

I read another book by Jennifer Weiner that I liked quite a bit more, but I can't remember the name of it. It is about the wife of a politician who has an affair. Perhaps you have read it. It was quite good, and I found myself wanting a sequel, so perhaps she will write one!

Thanks for the interesting and informative HUB. I have linked to it, voted it up, and LIKED it! :D
