Breaking News

Hot off the Press!

A rare photo of the man behind mckbirdbks: The one and only Mike Friedman!

The vote is in! Emerald Wells Cafe creator mckbirdbks is the best fiction writer on Hub Pages.

This multi-talented writer does it all. Writes a monthly chapter of the popular Emerald Wells Cafe series (that has just hit 39 installments) and hidden within the story creates a regular Speakeasy Night where the characters recite their poems to each other (all original poetry written by mckbbks) and afterwards dance all night to the juke box.

The story is set in 1956 so the music is rockin'. Elvis, Johnny Cash, and Aretha Franklin providing the tunes along with every Tom, Dick, and Diva from that era.

But it's the cafe staff and customers who we learn to love and laugh with. The glorious Em and her truck driving man Harold. Earl, the cook who watches from the kitchen. Carl, the mechanic, Gabby the dress maker, Rose, the baker, Dale, the police officer, and a host of secondary characters that live at the crossroads in an idyllic Texas town like no other.

Congratulations mckbirdbks!

Emerald Wells Cafe is your signature series, but you've also written other short fiction series on Hub Pages. 'I Should Have Died For My Country' and 'Murder Once Done' are written in three parts. And you have so many outstanding, stand alone fiction stories. The list is long, and I know what my favorites are. But I don't want to spoil it for others just getting to know you. My advice: Read them all, you won't be disappointed!

Thank you snakeslane. 'The Beats' is one of my all time favorites, where Earl, Dale and Carl are standing watch as Em talks with the strangers 'On The Road' that ended up in Emerald Wells.

Snakeslane, this is very nice of you.

In less than two years, the Best HP Fiction Writer has built a cast of characters that many of us interact with on a daily basis as if they are part of "our" family. We celebrate births, birthdays, and most of all, we celebrate the joys of everyday life.

EWC = Mike It is awesome for me to fathom the research and hours of thought that went into each and every one of his 39 (or so) installments. Yet, month after month he delivers to his 'demanding yet adorable patrons'! And, heaven only knows what the overhead is in coffee and cheese danish alone.

Mike also writes other stories if you are not already aware and his poetry is also fabulous. Congratulations, I couldn't be happier, Mike.

snakeslane, You are ever gracious for writing this tribute. Hugs, mar

I was never a poetry reader with a few exceptions, I did read Carl Sandburg, years back at 14 or so seems he wrote a poem called "Graves" that got my morbid attention and the book broke out in free verse which I found interesting. The poem "Graves" ended up being almost a prediction 3 years later and after that, I didn't read poem much until Mike kicked out interesting poems and I crossed back over to appreciate it more and more as he moved forward. His recent piece outside of the cafe "A Grand Day to Die" was probably the most astute piece I have read in my life, I've gone back so often to read it and listen to the Jimi Hendrix I think I've just about memorized both.

Great job deserved this honor!

Peace and Blessings,

Dusty I will have to look up the Carl Sanburg poem. Poetry is a very shortened, heightened version of the written word. In the right hands it pulls you in, and you are amazed. That mckbbks writing can do that for you is high praise, and worthy. Appreciate you being here for the celebration.

What a lovely way to pay tribute to mckbirdsbks - HubPages' best writer of fiction for 2012 - and also with reference to the best poet, the Eipgramman. Mike Friedman aka mckbirdbks versatile talents, so clearly demonstrated with Emerald Wells Cafe as well as with the rest of his hubs and illustrations - and not to talk about his comments in HubPages and replies on comments - simply command the respect and admiration of all readers.

Uh, well...uh, gee, I don't think I could do it again. I lifted the paragraph and emailed it to myself. Then I saved it in my word program. Then I made a slide in powerpoint. Then somehow (not sure how) I brought the paragraph into the slide show as a caption. Then I saved the slide in my pictures and edited it (cropped) in microsoft office picture manager and saved it as a jpeg image phew!!! It took a lot of experimenting.

Heavens to Murgatroyd, That is a long and winding road. I would have opened a new GIMP file, turned the background blue. Pasted the paragraph into the text block and saved it as a jpeg. My way sounds easier but who knows.

Hello snakeslane. I like the thumbnail slide show. Is that found in the capsule section as you are building your Hub? Seems to me 'I Should Have Died for My Country' and 'Murder Once Done' are part of the same Novel. To bad they are such a small part.

Oh, I just saw this has 105 comments. You must be having a great time.

snakeslane profile image

snakeslane 4 years ago from Canada Author

Hi mckbbks, the thumbnail option is in the photo capsule at the top when you are choosing your photo(s) for that capsule. To get more than one photo in the capsule you press Ctrl while you are choosing the photo(s) that you want. I just discovered how to do this today. The slides are working for me, but need to refine a bit as you can see.

A novel would be exciting. You have a good start.

Yes, lots of response to your winning the Fiction category. Thank you.

I'm back! It is nasty out there, lucky I followed just behind the sand truck on the way back, no problems.

Glad you made it out and back without a problem. The cats are happy also - fresh food.
