Waiting for an Ace

Source

I wore my real red dress and poker face

To the party, give me whisky on ice

Deal them down and dirty aces would be nice

I'm very patient, waiting for an ace

Lack of expression, void of any trace

Bets go 'round the table, up goes the price

I call your bet and raise you, roll the dice

I hope to take your chips and leave this place

~~~~~~~~~~~
The last hole card - it was filthy dirty
I got that sugar sweet and tasty ace
I am just going to take your money
I will be nice and I will be flirty
While I am raking up that soft green space
It's been real nice playing with you honey!
~ "In a game of poker, I can put the players souls in my poket." ~ Beausourire
Note:
A sonnet is a poem that has a particular arrangement of syllables and rhyming words. Austinstar began this sonnet craze with her poem "Ode to a Pizza." Real...
Wow...and giggity-giggity...
We need to get you to Reno and put you at a table my friend!
I like this sonnet trend...when done by talented folks such as you and others...i.e. ...not me. (you will note the 'e' and the 'me' form a rhyming pattern)... vowels maybe...
Voted all the Ups and am off to check out pizza!
Hi Thomas! I wanted to write something really housewifey like, but I really am going to Las Vegas in 5 days (who's counting?) so all I can think about is poker! Haha!
I love poker and casinos and lights and money!
Thanks so much and really - I'm not that talented - you just follow the pattern! Now do one! I know you can!
Thank you SW! I think this is really hard and I'm not sure I did it exactly right. The arrangement of rhymes is so different than anything I've done before. I love a good challenge though so I went for it:) are you going to write one? Come on! You should!
Remind me not to play poker with you! I suck at it anyway. I do play video poker machines when I go to Vegas and online I play video poker at http://www.freeslots.com/poker.htm for fun and practice! I have $4420 fun bux! Wish it were as Real as YOU are RealHousewife!
Good luck at the tables :-)
Hi Austin! I do love poker....the major was a huge gambler....if he didn't have anyone to play with he would practice with me:). I started playing when I was about 9! Lol. Thanks for the link! I love video poker - won 400 bucks at the casino playing not to long ago.
The major always said, don't gamle at the casinos - the house always wins. I am a better housewife than poker player - my odds go way up when I'm dealing!! Haha! Thank you so much - and thanks for the challenge!
Stacy - I thought about embedding that song:) lol. I love playing poker - so many kinds and it there's money to be won I like to try to take it all:) haha - I don't mind playing for chocolate either:). Thanks - my poem doesn't look right to me but I think I followed the rules? Thank you but I really liked yours and Lelas much better!
Dave plays too and I'm blowing him away....he takes too many risks...it isn't all about luck...you've got know when to hold 'em:-). I wonder if we are playing on the same circuit?? I'd love to play poker with you!!
Yep, formatting a poem is very difficult on HP. That's why it doesn't "look right". But It is correct as far as I can tell, though I didn't go in and micro-analyze it. It's good enough for government work as they say.
Haha! You're cracking me up! Hey - I'm listening to Nardo right now btw!!
I did think it was very hard! You know I worked on this for like 2 days! I think all my syllables are right...10 in each line and I followed tour handy dandy format. Bookmarked that hub - I am so glad you explained how to do it so I could practice. I have forgotten all the different types of poetry - what a shame!
My nephew went to Vegas and learned how to be a dealer. He knows just about every stat there is about poker. He also specializes in Texas Hold 'em. He's a great technical player and almost always comes out ahead. But my brother can play any game and win just because he knows how to read people. I can't do either one, so I always lose. But let me see anyone of you crossmatch blood for a transfusion and then I'll be impressed!
Oh carp, that sounded snotty, didn't it. Sorry! I am impressed with people that can play poker and write hubs. I am so retarded.
Cross your little green hands and wish me luck! I will thank you in advance:)
RealHousewife profile image
Hi Myth! Thank you so much for your comment - yeah not everyone likes poker. I think people tend tend to love it or hate it. The major was a math genius so he could tell you every single card that was already spent and what the odds were of getting any single card next. There are so many facets to it. To be honest - I am more intrigued by watching others body language to see if I can figure out what is in their hand. They better hold them close too because I will pick up grins, grimaces, foot tapping and eye brow raising. People just don't realize what an open book they can be:) lol
Love this, RealHousewife, and the red dress in the photo. My daughter was a dealer at Ameristar and always had a wad of money in her pocket. The smoke in the casino made her so sick, though, the ENT told her until she quit, treatment would be futile. He said he saw some ominious changes in her sinuses, so she put down the chips and never went back.
I've been to Vegas and it was an addictive blast. But, there's more sad stories than "get rich quick" tales. When my daughter was in grade-school, her dad and I had her in a private, Lutheran school. Across the street, one of the mom's with two children in the school, had a gambling addiction and she lost their home and committed suicide. That story alone will keep me away from gambling. I am frugal, by nature, and money is hard-earned. I wouldn't really make a good, full-time gambler.
RealHousewife profile image
RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author
Any - that is exactly why I say don't play with real money! A person should never risk what they can not afford to lose. My step dad preached to us the whole time he was teaching us to play - to never play with money:) haha - So many people fall prey to thinking that they next hand is going to be the lucky one...
I cant imagine working in a casino would be good for anyone due to the smoke! Oh my gosh. It is awful. I can't wait to go to Vegas, I have never been! I have also never ever been on vacation with just my husband - ever! It is going to be so strange not to have children!
Thanks so much St. Lou - I hope all is going good with you!
For a first effort, Kelly, this was astounding. Really good, m'dear. You are going to visit one of my favorite cities on the planet - Lost Wages. When you can tear yourself away from the poker tables and the casinos which are beyond fabulous in description, do wander in and out of the biggest hotels on the Strip and just gawk at the fixins. Like a Fairyland for not-quite-adult adults. You must see the fountains at Bellagio, ride the roller coaster inside New York, visit the Coca Cola store, the gondolas at Venezia, take in a few nightclub shows if the tariff hasn't become sky-high and just enjoy a fabulous city where softball games start at 3am in the morning and you can't find a seat in the crowded stands. Take notes and photos (except in the casinos). And above all, have a wonderful vacation, just hubby and you.
RealHousewife profile image
Hi Drbj! Laaaaa! I am so excited! I just know I am going to be having such a great time! Thanks for the tips - I was just online checking out stuff to do. I want to see at least one show....we rented a car too so I could visit the Mojave Desert and Hoover Dam. I for sure am going to check out the Bellagio - my mom said that I could spend a whole day just touring hotels! My daughter just got back and she won 400 at the Venitian.
Great descriptive too a Fairyland for not quite adult adults! You know I will fit right in!
I am booked at the Vdara where they have the Death Ray! haha - I had to check that out!
Thank you so much - I hope you get to go back to Vegas soon!
Hi Ruchira! Thank you! I find it hard to play online poker because I can't get those clues! Lol. The only thing I have found that is a good tell is when people bet high on the first two down cards - best they could have is two aces. Other than that - it's not as fun as playing with real people.
I used to play with my dad and he would say I see your hand all over your face! Lol.
Do you know that photographer, BJWOK? That's a lovely shot of the girl in the red dress.
You might try breaking up the octet and the sestet into two different text capsules. That helped on my poem. I found that using more text capsules helps eliminate the white space. Experiment and play!
Another thing that helps me is to use the "preview" button. You can see where hubpages is going to put the ads and how the final hub is going to look.
I still love the poem and the subject matter! It's great.
RealHousewife profile image
RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author
Thank you Austin! I wasn't sure how it tooled to all of you. On my laptop - the text boxes look perfect, on the iPad I see that white space that is oh so annoying. I couldn't tell which one you guys could see! I thought it was an iPad glitch! It doesn't look the same on laptop at all!
I have had this same problem before so I'm not sure how or why this happens.
I am SO glad you let me know! Thank you!
Right! I wonder why it looked normal on my laptop? I guess I have to trust the iPad for once. I am so glad you told me - now I know in the future it is REAL on the iPad. Last time I played around and got it to work out...this time the images were not the same at all but I wasn't sure which screen was correct. I would hate to think I had a jacked up page and never fixed it! You're awesome!
That is the webmaster's curse. I can always get a web page to look good on Firefox and my laptop, but then it looks ragged in Windows Explorer on a netbook. WTF?
Right now, my tables don't look right on Bob's computer or my netbook in Firefox for nardotheband.com, but they look fantastic on my Firefox laptop. Sometimes you just have to go with it.
Hi Will - I can believe it. I bet I look pretty dumb sitting in a poker game but it helps me:) lol. And it's a lot of luck too. Thanks - I believe I am going to have a pretty good time seeing Vegas for the first time! I don't play much in casinos - the house always wins.
Now I've got to go check out that hub because I do love poker - I think it gets in the blood by osmosis or something;). Thanks so much!
RealHousewife profile image
RealHousewife 5 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author
Hi ZZ - first how are you? Good to see you I know you've been out for a while.
Don't learn to play poker! Lol. It's just another bad habit and who needs those? There are many dynamics involved besides just the cards a lot of it is psychology. If I tap my foot and act like I'm nervous I just might get someone to stay in the game so I can take more chips....my personal favorite is to sit at a table and ask real dumb questions like "hey cowboy! Does a straight beat a flush or what?". Hahaha
I do love a game of go fish and I think battle is the same thing I call War:). It's all in fun!
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em.. Love the poem Kelly. I'll will rub the 4-leaf clover tat and think of all the credits coming your way-thats how its done in the casinos now, right- Is it a better way? Nah, theres something really special about twirling those chips around.
Very clever portrayal of the smiling of lady luck. Great video link, too. I love that Kenny Rogers song--it has to rank among my favorites of all time.
I'm no gambler myself. I only play poker or 21 on my computer from a CD with no real money at stake--I'm not good enough at either game to bet real money. But on the computer game, I nearly always "win" by bluffing and raising until I get all the other computer-generated players to fold. ;-) LOL
On the rare times I do visit a casino--I only play the nickel slots, and my strategy is this: one pocket holds my money; into the other goes any money that is paid out by the machine. When the first pocket is empty, I turn and walk away. I never play back any "winnings." I know the casinos hate me. Hee hee hee..
Voted up!
RealHousewife profile image
RealHousewife 4 years ago from St. Louis, MO Author
Hey DzyMsLizzy - that is how I gamble too! Ha! No we are the smart ones! I take a predetermined amount - the maximum is $50 dollars. If I win - I go home! lol I don't put it back in at all. If I lose the 50 - I hit the high road and consider it a cheap night out. Going to the movies would cost the same!
Thank you - keep on taking home the winnings!
Hi Cardisa! Thank you! I do love a game of poker and I am finding it much more difficult to play online - you do not get those tells at all...I can figure out the pattern people bet in - like if they bluff or get out early...but no facial ques or body language is tough for me:) lol.
