third floor

This hot, humid night

wears out its welcome,

and it was indeed a horrific sight,

it was at a run down hotel,

faded numbers on the door,

third floor,

the dead man was rigored

and jaundiced,

obviously diseased,

death was pleased,

the female detective turned around

slowly and sneezed,

there was a half bottle of cheap booze

on the floor by his feet,

an empty box of a Hostess treat

on the facing table,

a television was still on,

with a loose wire and cable,

the young female detective

was fresh to the street,

but in that room, third floor,

it was a 100 degree heat,

nonetheless she guarded the door

with an earnest sincerity.

but she was sure,

she would rather be behind a desk,

and she wouldn’t ask for anything more.
