DIY Home Improvement - Is Your Backyard Party Ready?

Planning your next big backyard party requires more than just putting together a shopping list for food and drinks. The cleanliness and care that you put into your home and property are a reflection on you as a host and homeowner. You should create an environment where your guests can feel comfortable and enjoy themselves by following these few tips to spruce up your backyard.

Start at the Deck and Move Outward

Determine where you’ll be hosting the party in the backyard and start the cleanup process from there. If you are having the party on your deck or patio area, use a power washer to eliminate dirt and clean up stains that have developed in the wood or cement. Don’t have a power washer or the budget to buy one? No worries, power washers can be easily and affordably acquired for the day through your local equipment rental and will certainly save you time that would otherwise be spent manually cleaning.

Use a light detergent on patio furniture and cushions, and give the furniture ample time to dry before your guests arrive. Place any furniture cushions directly in the sun so they don’t have the opportunity to develop mildew that could cause odors. If you are planning on having your party during the cooler months, rent a patio heater that can keep everyone warm and make the experience more enjoyable.

The boards and railings of your deck should be checked thoroughly and anything that is loose or unstable needs to be repaired. If the fixes are simple enough for DIY then grab your tools and get to it prior to the party, but if it looks like they might require extensive repairs then don’t ignore the problem either tape off the unstable section to keep guests from getting injured or just plan to have the party in the yard or inside.

Tackle the Yard

Now that the deck and patio are looking their best from a good power washing and are ready for entertaining, look around at the yard and see what else needs to be done. Are there plants or tree limbs hanging over the patio that could get in the way? Have you mowed your law recently? These are all minor details, but play an important role in the overall perception.

A leaf blower with the help of a good old fashion rake can clear up any debris, leaves or stray branches lying on the ground. A wood chipper can help save time in yard clean up, helping you get rid of the large branches, create free mulch for the flower beds and creating compost for the garden. Large yards can benefit from a riding lawn mower, if you don’t already have one consider renting one for the day as you will get a lot more done in a shorter amount of time.

The Final Details

Last but not least, once the yard and deck are all cleaned up and ready to go, check to see if you have everything you need for the party essentials. Make sure you have trash bags readily available and plenty of places for guests to sit and relax. If you plan your party to continue on after dark, supply ample lighting all the way around the yard.

Try not to group all of the seating in one area, but allow room to move around and communicate with different groups of people. With everything in place and the compliments flooding in from your guests, you’ll be thankful that you put in the work to get your yard up to par.
