All About Electric Ovens

If you are someone who loves to cook and to bake, your oven is one of the most important appliances in your kitchen and even the rest of your home. For many people, the answer will be that it depends on what you cook and what your preference may be. However, in many people’s opinion, including very experienced chefs, electric ovens are the way to go. Electric ovens provide many great features and abilities that gas ovens do not.

Why Buy an Electric Oven?

In the ongoing debate over which type of oven, electric or gas, is the best for the home cook, a few key features arise over and again as to what makes the electric oven the best choice for many people. The first thing that many home bakers and cooks will tell you is that electric ovens provide a more consistent heat for the inside baking chamber. This even heat provides for more dependable baking times. Given this even heat, many people consider electric ovens to be more easy to use—you can rest assured that baking times will remain consistent for a particular recipe. Also, a heat that is distributed evenly throughout the baking chamber will mean that trays of cookies or wide casserole dishes will receive the same amount of heat on either end. This eliminates the need to open the oven door and rotate the cooking sheet or casserole dish. This can keep your kitchen cooler and cut down on electricity expenditure.

Another great feature of electric ovens is that they are often equipped with fans that help circulate the hot air within the cooking chamber. Again, this has the result of a more even heat and can even cut down on the time that is required to cook a certain dish. Convection ovens are one special type of electric oven that many home cooks and bakers swear by for preparing delicious and easy meals.

Of course, one large advantage of electric ovens is that just about any home can be easily installed with this kind of appliance. Some homes are not equipped with natural gas lines, which rules out the possibility of using a gas oven without some costly upgrades to the home. In a similar vein, your town or neighborhood might not have gas lines as part of the overall infrastructure.

Finally, many home chefs prefer electric ovens because they are better for browning meats or casseroles. Cooking with gas introduces water vapor into the cooking chamber, which can make browning more difficult or more uneven. The heat in an electric oven is a more dry heat.

Electric Ovens are Easy to Repair

In addition to the advantages that electric ovens provide in terms of cooking you and your family’s favorite dishes, these ovens also carry the added benefit of being easy to repair for most electric oven problems. In most cases, the troubles you will encounter with electric ovens is that they will not rise to the proper temperature or they begin to cook your food more unevenly. Both of these problems can be solved easily, often with only a few moments of your time.

The first thing that can happen with your electric oven is that the thermostat will need to be adjusted or replaced. Most thermostats are designed to control oven heat to within 25 degrees Fahrenheit. If you are seeing greater variances in oven temperature than that you will probably need someone to replace your thermostat. For smaller variations, you can easily adjust your thermostat with the use of a household screwdriver. The thermostat on most electric ovens can be adjusted either at the back of the thermostat knob or in the thermostat shaft. Turning the adjustment screw a quarter turn in either direction will raise or lower oven heat by about 25 degrees.

The other thing that can occur is that one of the heating elements goes bad in your electric oven. If this occurs, it is a simple matter of determining which heating element, either the top or the bottom, does not glow when the oven is turned on. Wait for the oven to cool, turn the electric supply to the oven off at the breaker, and remove the faulty heating element from your electric oven, usually by loosening the holding screws. Then all you need do is take the element to your appliance store to find a matching unit.

The upshot of all of this is that electric ovens provide you with an unparalleled convenience as well as cooking experience. You can make all your favorite dishes easily and creatively in your electric oven!
