Bathtub Vs. Standing Shower Vs. Tub/Shower Combo

Do you have a bathtub in your home? Maybe you have a standing shower instead. You don't have either one? What do you have then? A bathtub/shower combo? That's the best of both worlds.

I'm sure that each person reading this has their own preference. I, personally prefer a tub/shower combo. That's what I grew up with. I love it because I have more choices. I don't like the idea of only being able to take showers with a standing shower. Conversely, I also don't like the idea of only being able to take baths in a bathtub. I suppose you could say that I like the power of being able to pick whether I'm going to take a shower or a bath...or both!

I, myself have never owned a bathtub (unless it was a bathtub/shower combo and had a shower attached to it). When my boyfriend and I were looking for apartments here in Oklahoma, we came across two apartments that had bathtubs. That was actually a deal breaker for me. I did not want to only have a bathtub. I don't like the thought of always having to take baths. To me, I feel like baths take too long. They don't seem to be as quick as taking a shower.

Pros of bathtubs: It's relaxing to soak in a nice, hot bath. Bathtubs, especially if they're big, are popular with kids because it reminds them of a pool. Bathtubs are great for cleaning, washing, or especially soaking any items that are too big for your sinks.

Cons of bathtubs: A lot of people despise having to clean their bathtub. You have to be patient and wait for a bathtub to fill. Bathtubs aren't very convenient for the elderly or disabled.

Standing Showers

If I had to choose between having a home with only a bathtub or only a standing shower, I would personally prefer the standing shower. I like being able to soak in the bathtub, but I feel like showers are quicker. When taking a bath, you have to wait until it's filled, but I can just jump right in a shower without hesitation. Then, ten minutes later, I'm done and out of the shower.

Pros of standing showers: Unlike waiting for a bathtub to fill, you don't have to wait to get in the shower. You can just jump in the shower, clean yourself, and be done quickly. It can be relaxing to let the hot water beat down on you. Showers are more manageable for the elderly or the disabled. Showers can come with shower seats and/or grab bars to make it easier.

Cons of standing showers: If you ever feel the need to lay back, relax, and soak, you can't do that in a shower.

Bathtub/Shower Combos:

As I've already stated, bathtub/shower combos are my personal favorite. If I had to make a decision between getting just a bathtub, just a shower, or a bathtub/shower combo, I'd pick the bathtub/shower combo. Hands down.

Pros of bathtub/shower combos: Combine all of the pros of the bathtub and the standing shower. They are also the pros of the bathtub/shower combo.  If you want 'the best of both worlds', but don't have enough space for a bathtub and a separate standing shower, this is a great choice.  You can soak in a nice, hot bath anytime you choose to. You can use the bathtub to clean anything that's too big for your sinks. If you don't feel like taking a bath or if you don't have time, then you can just take a shower instead. Bathtub/shower combos are great for any family. Bathtubs are popular with children. Adults usually prefer showers, but can soak in the bathtub if they desire. The elderly or disabled will like that they can take a shower since it's easier for them.

Cons of bathtub/shower combos: Like with the bathtub cons, people tend to dislike cleaning their bathtub.

Hi Jenny Leigh, great hub. Have you looked into the walk-in tub yet? It is definitely the answer for the elderly and handicapped. But expensive I believe.

Hope your pregnancy is going well!

Finally an Abrigg .. - I got to hold sweet Kai early Saturday morning. He was SOOOO sweet. He fell right to sleep after a litlte conversation with me about the light and his brother Sawyer. I put him on my shoulder and he because mezmorized by the light and fell right to sleep! I put him in his bed while his daddy helped Peter. You were sound asleep and Sawyer was so jealous that he was't in my lap.
