Beat the British Winter: How to Replace an Old Boiler For Free

Source

It's almost that time of year again, when the hot water bottles come out and the heating starts to get used again. If you are, however, one of those unfortunate enough to have recently had a boiler breakdown or have a totally unusable one that needs replacing it might come as pleasant surprise to you that if you're on a low income, then you may not have to fork out a tonne of £££'s to get your old one replaced, in fact, if you know where to look, you might even be eligible to get a replacement boiler and loft insulation for FREE.

Getting a Government Grant for a replacement Boiler

These days, indoor heating and hot water are pretty much basic essentials for households the world round, especially with the weather changing and the winters getting colder year by year. The Warm Front government funded initiative are supplying new boilers and the installation of loft insulation free of charge to low income households eligible to receive the benefit as of April 2011. Feel free to use the short quiz below to find out whether you may or may not be eligible to receive the benefit. Please note, however, I cannot tell you for certain whether or not you or your household will be allowed to participate in the scheme because I neither am. nor do I actually represent an official from the initiative.

Eligibility

The basic criteria for eligibility to participate in the scheme are as follows:

Eligible customers are all those awarded:

  • Pension Credit or;
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance

And those awarded:

  • Income Support or;
  • income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, or;
  • income-related Employment and Support Allowance in the assessment phase (first 13 weeks of the claim)

Who must also have one of the following:

  • a pensioner premium. or;

If you aren't eligible

If you aren't eligible to receive funding from the Warm Front scheme, don't fret! Although the government abolished the old boiler scrappage scheme introduced in early 2010, there are still independent energy companies that offer similar deals, and energy companies including British Gas and Southern Electric that offer not only cashback with boilers but because of the time of the year, decent amounts of most if not all boilers in their range.
