Slatwall Inside?

If you intend to incorporate a black accent wall into your interior space, consider slatwall for a unique design touch. Before you start a black wall project, bear in mind that painting anything black in an interior space is a daring and bold choice. Black walls tend to show a static space that needs to be accessorized properly to achieve your design goals. Perhaps it's wise to explain what slatwall is before going any further

Slatwall is a material primarily sold in 4x8 sheet stock at retail supply stores for use in displays, cash wraps, and long walls inside a retail store. Merchants utilize special hardware that slided into the grooves to allow product to be displayed and purchased from. It should be noted that slatwall also has a residential application within garage spaces. The slatwall accessories provide a useful system of storage for garage related items. Slatwall comes in many colors, textures and materials. Most interestingly, it is produced in a paint grade variety. This should be your choice when incorporating your black wall.

The Black Wall: Painting Accent Walls

A Good Color Black for Accent Wall

Painting slatwall is no easy task. To get a clean finish, one needs to paint way down into the grooves of the slatwall so that no unpainted surface shows. Choosing the color black is a matter of your design point of view, but trends suggest that the most popular black colors are ones that have a more graphite appearance. Very dark, black-ish browns are a very hot design trend. Be sure to prime the surface completely prior to applying the top coats for finish paint. It may take up to three proper coats of the finish black paint to cover the raw slatwall. If you choose an oil based paint, make sure to take the necessary safety precautions. Use eye and respiratory equipment at all times. It might be smart to paint the slatwall prior to installation. Doing so will save time and you'll only be left with touch up painting after. The installation in the picture above was done in the opposite fashion because a spray painting technique was used. If you have access to power painters, use them.

Accessorizing a Black Accent Wall

Slatwall is very agile and utilitarian in nature. Not only is slatwall visually interesting, it provides a purpose that will benefit everyday use. The same slatwall accessories available for retail application can be put to good use in kitchens and bathrooms as well. Use the hooks for towels, etc. in the bathroom, or use clever shelving like in the picture for kitchen applications. Let your inner interior designer out when accessorizing with a black wall. Contrasting colors like whites, greens and pinks work really well to calm down the impact of black. Consider a few decorative vases, fresh cut flowers, or tea lights to finish off the space. Be certain that any candles or lighted elements are far enough away from the slatwall to prevent a fire or peel the paint. Edit your interior with a good designing eye. Sometimes too much really is too much. Let your black wall do the talking. (let your friends at the dinner party talk later)

Show it Off

Now that you've incorporated a unique, modern, and unexpected upgrade to your interior space, all you have to do is show it off. Let your design intuition guide you when tweaking. Just be conscious of over tweaking. Have a dinner party and ask for inspiration if you get stuck, but it's your space. Let your black wall tell your interior story
