My Weathervane
My Weathervane

Weathervanes are a very cool decoration found on many barns. They can tell about the interests of the owner and are often very colorful.

Weathervanes are most commonly used by farmers so they knew which way the wind was blowing on any given day. Weathervanes are the oldest forms of weather prediction and the name comes from the Old English word "fane" which means flag or banner. There are some indications that weathervanes are mentioned in ancient writings by the Mesopotamia over 3500 years ago. The Chinese also mention strings or flags used to to read wind direction in the 2nd Century BC. Weathervanes have been around for a very long time. For many centuries the rooster was the most common weathervane and is believed to be a papal edict that a rooster be installed on the roof of every church to recall Peter's betrayal of Jesus. Exactly when the rooster was incorporated into a weathervane is not known.

Today you can get just about anything on a weathervane, from roosters to boats to tractors to animals. The selection is endless. A weathervane is a wonderful decoration on any barn. When I bought my current house there was a very old rusty weathervane on my barn and my husband took it down and painted it. I have been offered over 100 dollars for it but will not part with it. Mine is a rooster.

This is very interesting. I didn't know you could get designer Weather vanes. Yours looks cute and big too.

Sadly, you'll hardly see this in London except in the Countryside. All you see on the top of peoples houses and flats now are Satellite dishes.

Interesting Read. :)

Thanks so much Lady E I didn't realize they had designer weathervanes either until I started to do this hub. And some of them are very expensive.

I still like the rooster weather vanes best. (I'm such a purist) But that crescent moon and vampire bat would probably go along way in keeping kids out of the yard...spooooky!
