Cleaning With White Vinegar is it a Safe Alternative to Harsh Chemicals?

White Vinegar

My Experience with Cleaning with White Vinegar

I must tell you as a kid growing up on my grandmas farm I have spent many hours cleaning windows using white vinegar. Now you might think that I cleaned 10 or 20 windows at a time like there would be in any other house. However, you would be wrong! The farm house had this back porch that was inclosed and had these louvered windows with about 30 windows in each window pane. This would be OK if there was just one of these, but there were 10 of these windows that went all across the front and side of the porch! That job took forever!

One of the best parts of using white Vinegar to clean these windows is that it would dry streak free and it went a lot faster than if I used Windex.

Vinegar and Water

How do you Clean Windows with White Vinegar?

The way my grandma mixed up the white vinegar solution is with equal parts of vinegar and warm water. Now she would mix it up in a bucket and I used a cloth to wash the windows because they would get very dirty on the farm. Then to dry them I would use news paper. I must tell you that news paper is perfect for cleaning windows and mirrors because you will get a lent and streak free shine using them.

If you are going to be cleaning a car window with white vinegar or just a few windows around the house. By all means, put it in a spray bottle and store it in a cabinet to use when ever you like! The water does not need to be warm or hot, it works great cold too!

Using White Vinegar to Clean the Bathroom

Just like cleaning windows white vinegar will clean your bathroom tiles and faucets and leave a streak free shine. But that's not all, white vinegar is great at killing shower mold. Vinegar will kill about 83% of all common household mold. This includes the black mold that grows on grout and if there is any white mold that could be growing on wood around the cabinets.

If you have stubborn black mold stains on grout you can get the area you wish to clean wet with water then sprinkle on some baking soda and then spray with white vinegar. The vinegar and baking soda will have a foaming reaction to help clean remove the stains. Let this set for a few minutes and then spray with vinegar again and wipe clean. You can repeat and you can scrub if need be.

Baking soda and white vinegar works great for cleaning toilets. It will remove water and rust stains along with lime and calcium deposits and all can be done without and harsh chemicals.

All you need to do is flush the toilet to get the inside bowl area wet and then sprinkle on the baking soda, then spray with white vinegar. This will start a chemical reaction that will foam. Next add about a half to one cup of baking soda in the water of the bowl and add an equal amount of baking soda. Left this set for about 15 minutes and then give a light scrubbing with the brush and flush and you toilet will be clean like bran new!

Cleaning the Kitchen with White Vinegar

Just like using white vinegar to clean the bathroom tiles, it works great as well on the kitchen tiles. You can dilute it with a 50/50 mixture of water and vinegar and spray on and wipe off. Again I recommend using newspaper to wipe it off for a lint and streak free shine.

Now you do not have to dilute the vinegar of you choose not to. However there is no need to go full strength when cleaning the tiles.

Now if you have stains in the grout either on the kitchen floor or on the counter top I do recommend using straight white vinegar. These steps are similar to cleaning the toilet. Sprinkle on some baking soda in the area you want to clean and then spray on 100% white vinegar. This will again cause a foaming reaction and then let set for a few minutes. Next take a brush and give it a little scrub and if you need it to be a little wetter spray more vinegar on the area and then wipe clean.

White Vinegar and Baking Soda

Cleaning with White Vinegar

White Vinegar can be used to clean other areas of the house as well and if you need a little more scrubbing action please break out the baking soda and use as directed above.

So what else can you clean with white vinegar?

  • Lamps
  • Light switches - Be careful and don't spray directly. I recommend using a cloth damp with vinegar.
  • Wood floors
  • Tile floors
  • Pour some in sink drains and garbage disposal to kill odors.
  • Clean your cars interior, chrome, and wheels!
  • Leather and vinyl couches and chairs. Its also great for cleaning patio furniture!
  • Use it to clean water slime or stains off of pool rafts and toys.
  • Add a cup of vinegar to your laundry to remove mildew odors from cloths.
  • Use a 50/50 mixture of water and white vinegar and add a tea spoon of dish soap in a spray bottle to remove pet stains and odors from carpet. Spray on the carpet and get it it very wet and let set for a few minutes. Then use a dry towel and press and soak up the mixture. You can scrub the area a little bit but don't over do it as you can damage the carpet fibers and leave a noticeable mark.

You can basically can use it on any smooth surface that wont break down if it gets wet!
