What to do with old Vintage Items
This hub is about found Items For decorating, most of the time this would be vintage items. Here are some of my items and just ideas for what you can do with cheap vintage items you have picked up here and there from yard sales, rummage, tag or antique stores. They may be old, but they are still useful. Many times old items are made better than new furniture pieces.
What is vintage, to me it’s what you remember from childhood and you know you want the item again. I'm old so my vintage is old, but yours may only be 20 years. A cartoon glass you remember drinking out of. Anything you love and remember.
My style is eclectic and some would say granny. I said to my daughter one day I like to mix old with new and she said, "I know you do Mom." I'm not sure what she meant when she said that. She has picked up this style. She has the modern style living room with antique mirrors all over the walls, looks very nice.
Recycle, Recycle and Recycle!
Old Furniture What To Do With It
Anything can be turned into something great and cheap for your home. I decorate with whatever I can find. Add some paint in a bright color bring the item into the modern world.
Old dressers (chest of drawers) can be turned into sideboards for your dining room, in a small house they work great because they are so good for storage. We use our dresser for our big screen television.
They can also be painted and used as end table either by the bed or the sofa. If you like leave them rustic. Like the photo below.
We used our old dresser in our bathroom for our sink. We left the large mirror on it. It's really nice, it's big has lots of counter space and I love the large mirror with it.
You can always bring the outdoor items in and the inside items out. Old outdoor wicker chairs look nice around an old farm table.
Reusing old furniture is also very green, less in the landfill. Watch any of the decorating shows and they always use old pieces.
You will find in many of my hubs from armoire to the kitchen pantry I use lots of old stuff. Many of the photos you see on here are what you can do with old pieces of furniture their not all in my house. The old pieces you see have not been redone are mine.
Book Shelves For Found Projects.
We have an old barn full of stuff like this. An old bookcase can be painted used for a bookcase or for storage of other items in your house. If the items in the bookcase need to be hidden add a rod and make or buy a curtain for it. Beef the look up by adding trim. Paint in a bright color.
The white bookcase you see is now upstairs in our house with a fresh coat of paint. This bookcase came out of my husband's childhood home. I'm using it for my sewing items. You know quilters always have a big stash and need a place to put their stash.
The old vintage bookcase can be used any place. They are great for children's toys, coloring books and reading books. Just add baskets go on a mission until you find the right size basket.
Old doors can be used for desktop this is what I use in my computer room. They can be used for dividers, tabletops, island tops, and headboards.
Drop Leaf Tables and Antique Sewing Machines.
I love drop leaf type of tables. They can be used for a side table in the bedroom or living room. I use one I have for my sewing machine. I like it for this because it can stay small but if I need more room while sewing I just lift the leaves on both sides or just one side, then I have lots more room to spread my fabric out.
The same goes for old antique sewing machines in those pretty old cabinets, if no longer in use they can be used in a hall to hold keys, a place to drop items when you come in the door or for side tables by a sofa, don't forget to add a lamp. Little drawers can keep TV remotes and other small items you need nearby.
Found Old Wagons
Turn old wagons into a place for your flowers or a mini herb garden. My old wagon is still in the barn. One of those projects we have to get to.
I have seen them done as coffee tables with a piece of glass on top. You can also leave off the glass and you have a place to put books, remotes and maybe a plant. If you like the rusted look, spray paint a clear varnish on them so the rust won't fall off.
If you're having a party, wagons are also a good place for ice and drinks. If they leak add a piece of plastic to keep it from leaking all over. You can pull it anywhere you want. You can also add glow sticks so the drinks can be seen at night.
Old wash tubs or copper kettles can also be used outside for your party uses them for drinks and ice. Hang your old washtub or copper kettles on a shepherd’s pole and plant flowers in it.
Use old jars for your candles. We all have so many glass jars we throw away every year. Mason jars, of course, we all love, use them for display. This mason jar has berries and milkweed pods in it. A mason jar can go in the bathroom add sand and seashells.
Decorating with old ladders
Old ladders come in all types step ladders, platform, extension, folding ladders, articulated ladders. Their tall short all sizes. Extension ladders would be newer, but there are some old looking ones and remember you can always cut a big ladder down if you have to or take an extension ladder apart. Articulated ladders can be folded up in many different ways and are mostly metal. You can always turn them into a table and put a piece glass on them for the top. Step ladders are the best the ones you can really do something with and you can find many old ones. Folding ladders are so nice because they come in very small to tall and you can find old ones in all colors. You open them wide or leave them folded and just lean against a wall. I love the little wood ones sold very cheap not long ago. I don't know if they still sell cheap.
Old ladders have so many uses, put them in the garden for plants.
Hang one up to hang hummingbird feeders, candles, or chimes from or hang plants on them
Hang one in the house for pot and pans or for a bookshelf.
Hang on wall and use for pictures or elegant knick knacks.
Use in the bathroom for towels.
Hang beautiful quilts on a ladder.
Use on the side of the bed for a nightstand to hold your book, clock, glass or bible.
Two ladders together 3 boards in between them for shelves will hold lots of your items.
Use them to hang your pretties on.
Use them to put shoes on.
Put a top on a ladder and turn it into a ladder stool.
Leave them rustic or paint them in a pretty color.
Use an old ladder to grow a vine on.
Some old items turned into New items.
Many Found Item To Redo.
On the right, you will see different pictures of items can be done in different ways. There's the old items from our barn and the way they could look. If painted and cleaned up. Some things I like to leave the same.
Anything vintage and old can be turned into something great. Old wire trash can for holding toilet paper. Use old baskets for puppies, flowers, magazines or kitchen towels.
Old rake heads or full rakes for hanging aprons or dish towels on. You can also put stem glasses on a rake head. They are cute decoration on the porch or the deck. Hang in the bedroom to hold necklaces.
Old lanterns hang from a branch you find outside and place indoors with each one of lanterns on the branch. I use the lanterns around the house on different shelves. They can also be used to hang in tree branches outside and candles or solar lights placed inside. Use shepherds hook add citronella oil, keep the mosquitoes away. Hang them outside on an old ladder. The lantern you see I would never think about painting it. It has an old green paint on it from years ago and that's the way I will leave it.
Old chairs, old wicker chairs paint and add cushions. If they’re no good for sitting on put flowers in them for the yard. There are also some old chairs in the pictures they can be painted in bright colors and used in any room.
Collect old chairs paint them all one color and use them at your table. They will look great. I'm sure I have Gypsy I would love the all the color around a table.
Metal chairs done in all colors. They can be found once they get rusty people don't want them. They are pretty done in all the colors how neat would it look for an outside party.
Old windows can be used for anything. Hang pictures in them or collections I had one in my kitchen to hang my pot and pans on. Add mirrors to an old window and it will look nice hanging anywhere in the house.
Old antique refrigerators paint use to keep books in or anything you want to store will be safe in it.
Old stoves add a light kit and place outside on the deck or just use on deck as a wood burner. If you use as a wood burner just be sure it vents and sits on a safe floor. Paint in a pretty fire safe paint. You may also be able to add glass crystals to old vintage fireplaces; you would have to check on to see if it’s safe. It would sure be pretty looking at the crystals glowing on the deck at night.
Old kitchen stools repaint and recover in any kind of fabric. If you have room stools in the kitchen are always handy.
Reuse Old Bed Yard Sale Buy.
This bed I bought from a cousin for about $20.00. It was brown and not to good looking. I took it home painted it and put it in the bedroom where the granddaughters slept. I only buy the head boards and foot boards never the mattresses. I just can't buy used mattress.
We just pulled it out of storage and have put it in our tiny farm bedroom.
My nieces were just visiting and when they saw our little farmhouse they got some ideas. One niece lives in a big house and she needed to warm it up and give it some character and she is now on a search for some items she saw here. The other niece lives in a cute little farm house. The search is the fun part of decorating.
Beds and Chandlier
The beds we bought from an ad in the paper paid $65.00 for them. Old quilts on the bed, one is from my grandmother and the other I got at a yard sale. The dresser I can't remember where we bought it must have been a yard sale, made of Birdseye maple, with the mirror. I don't have the mirror up yet and one knob is missing around here somewhere. We put this room together very fast. All you need is a wedding and see how fast you get things done. Some of the pillows are made from old Levi shirts. The plates on the wall are vintage plates.
It's so much fun to get an item you want in your head and then start the search for it. Looking high and low and maybe taking a year or more to find just what you want. You can now buy things from craigslist, and online yard sales for your city,
This light I bought on eBay. No one wanted it because it has the big light bulbs instead of the little ones. Cleaned it up added some extra crystals I had and bought shades from Menards for it. I have another one coming and I'll show it when it's cleaned up.
The white chandelier is from a rummage sale. I like adding odd things to my chandeliers. Christmas time is a great time to get pretty this for hanging on a chandelier.

- How (Not) To: Two Cheap Facelifts For Used Wood Dressers
Refreshing tired dressers.
This old wood box I sit by my back door. I had to measure it and then find baskets which would fit in it. I use it for mittens, gloves and scarfs in the winter. You could also put some boots in the baskets if you line them with a plastic. Great place for flip flops and garden shoes in the summer. You can click the photos to see the large look.
Use old wood boxes for just about anything. This one I have my glasses in.
I know lots of young girls would just call this a granny house and I guess it is. But if they would just think about it, so much furniture could be bought cheap, pretty color added with a modern look and they could have a great place which would look modern. Modern handles put on the dresser. All sorts of things can be done to make vintage look modern.
I saw some revamping of some vintage furniture to a modern look on the Nate Show. The items looked great. There are really so many talented young women out there who are redoing and refurbishing old junk.
Below are just some ideas of what can be done with old junk.
Hit those Flea Markets and yard sales. Song-Bird has a good list of markets in each state.
Hope you enjoyed my hub on old and vintage items and the way they can be redone. You can always find something you can decorate your home with.
Recycle Items For The Yard
We had an old screen house without the top and we used the pieces from it as a trellis for our grapevine. The vine is so big the trellis can't be seen when it's all leafed out. The picture to the right isn't the best, but you can get the idea from what the pieces of the screen house look like. Actually we bought those pieces at a rummage sale a few years ago because I knew they would work for trellises somewhere in the yard. The second picture to the right is the grapevine after it leafed out. There is just one vine and it gets huge.
Use old wine bottles to make a bottle tree for the garden it keeps evil away. Plant climbing vines on the bottle tree in the spring.
In picture below you will see the bottle tree. There's an old fence we got from a friend I planted my flowers in front of it. The grapevine also shows up here. The two purple chairs are some my brother-in-law was getting rid of, very old metal chairs. He asked if I wanted them for out here. The chairs were black not very pretty. A yard always looks good with a pop of color. I painted the garden chairs purple. I read somewhere once or saw it on a garden show everyone should have one bright colored object in their yards. The garden chairs are my bright colored objects.
Redo Old Chairs In Oilcloth.
I saw these chairs at a little shop. They have been made into a bench. Old chairs painted white and covered in oilcloth. They are so cute. They could be put around a table. If your chairs don't have the type of backs that can be covered than cut out a piece of plywood and use for the back. You can cut plywood for the seat and the back. Cover plywood in batting and put oilcloth over the top. Use a staple gun to secure in place. There are so many pretty patterns in the nice shiny oilcloth. Great if you have kids it can be wiped right off.
The same day we bought two old chairs at a yard sale for a dollar. Hope to get to them and do them like these chairs. I found the two old chairs for just a couple dollars. They can easily be turned into a bench.
The gossip bench was bought at a flea market for $35.00. I hope to paint it in a new color and use it by my back entrance. Their old tables my grandmother had one and they were fun to sit on and talk with friends.
We moved into an old farmhouse. The cabinets in the kitchen were awful so we put new cabinets on the bottom. On the top, we just added a shelf unit my daughter was throwing away and a small roll top cabinet I bought for $3.00 at a yard sale. They make the kitchen look country.
