Oh how I love porch swings. Let me count the ways. From classic Victorian white complete with the filigree to the more rustic swings completed in natural wood. I love porch swings.

When I built my home, I had a close business associate confide to me that I picked the wrong design. For you see I opted for the frugal option, the design without the front porch. And you know what for the cost differential, he was right. I did choose the wrong design.

I have grown wiser in dollars and wise in home design. I have made a literal fortune with my homes and probably could have made more IF I understood the design features that people crave.

A porch is one thing but a porch with a porch swing is calling for family memories. A porch swing adds not necessarily grandeur but a reminiscence of times past with loved ones. For you see the porch swing is better than a boutique of flowers, because it is a beautiful bouquet of memories for your front door.

There is literally a swing for every possible architectural style and yet the Victorian style remains, decades, a century later. The classic elegance of the swing either on the front porch or stand alone or under an arbor all craft memories and lend a quick smile to our very soul.

Salvage Swings

As an avid eBay shopper, I find it fascinating the fact that there are very few salvaged swings in existence. I credit this fact to the popularity. People love their swings and typically swings simply stay forever. So the moral of the story is to expect to add a reproduction swing if you are shopping for a swing. If you own a swing, take special note, you own an item that is in high demand.

Victorian Gingerbread and Swings

The Victorian era is well known for its intricate gingerbread exterior decoration and yet the swing is perhaps more iconic of the Victorian era and celebrated in etchings, cards and drawings. One of the perhaps most widely known poems is by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Who was this laureate poet? Robert Lewis Balfour Stevenson was born on November 13th 1850 in Edinburgh , Scotland. He died at age 44 on December 3rd 1894 in Vailima, Samoan Islands

And what precisely was the Victorian era? "The Victorian era of British history was the period of Queen Victoria's reign from 20 June 1837 until her death, on 22 January 1901." And Historians have characterized the mid-Victorian era, (1850–1870) as Britain's 'Golden Years.'.[6] There was prosperity, as the national income per person grew by half.

Friends in your life are like the pillars on your front porch. Sometimes they hold you up and sometimes they lean on you. Sometimes its just enough to know they are standing by.

Swing Swing! Sing Sing! Victorian Song

Swing, swing! Sing, Sing!

Here's my throne and I am a King!
Swing, Sing! Swing, Sing!

Farewell, earth, for I'm on the wine!

Low, High, here I fly!

Iskike a bird through the sunny sky!

Free, free, over the lea!

Over the mountain, over the sea!

Up, down, up and down!

Which way to Isadon town?

Where, where? Up in the air!

Close your eyes - and you are now there!

Soon, soon, afternoon,

Over the sunset, over the moon

Far, far ever all bar,

Sweeping on from start to star!

No, no! Low, low,

Sweeping daisies with my toe,

Isow, law to and fro,

Slow - slow - slow - slow.

The Swing - Poem by Robert Louis Stevenson

How do you like to go up in a swing,
Up in the air so blue?
Oh, I do think it the pleasantest thing
Ever a child can do!

Up in the air and over the wall,
Till I can see so wide,
River and trees and cattle and all
Over the countryside--

Till I look down on the garden green,
Down on the roof so brown--
Up in the air I go flying again,
Up in the air and down!

Robert Louis Stevenson

Sizes and Structure of the Porch Swing

A porch swing doesn't have to be a full 5 feet in length. A porch swing could be handcrafted from building salvage materials. On rare occasions you will see a metal porch swing. Let your imagine roam and I challenge you to design or craft your own Victorian porch swing.

Some porch swings are hung with thick, solid roping. This gives a softer, more refined appearance the the chain. Look closely at the photos I have shared with you and you will note the method of suspending the swing does make a difference in the overall appearance of the swing.

Stand a Lone Porch Swings With or Without Arbors

Yet, if you were like me and your home does not have a front porch, don't lament. There are options. A stand alone swing can work beautifully in a side yard or a back yard.

The ultimate in the stand a lone porch swing would be the double tiered roofed arbor with double swings. Doesn't this just look like John boy sat here?

Yet a stand alone porch swing with an arbor makes a delightful display when combined with the climbing rose.

Don't skimp when you invest in this swing, if you don't include the climbing rose, you will be missing that old world charm that sets a home apart and pays dividends to you and your family - both over the years in enjoyment and at the time of closing if you should choose to sell your home.

The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch swing with, never say a word, then walk away feeling like it was the best conversation that you ever had.

I am made for a porch swing and beyond. Gazing at the romantic Victorian swing made me wish I had one. Fantastic hub. Voted up and completely across (with exception of funny) and will pin and share. ~ Audrey

Vocal Coach,

Oh, I am ready for a swing for spring and summer. During the dark days of winter, I love to dream of the garden and all its delights.
