Home Made Mosquito Trap

This is very simple and does work.

Get a large 2 liter Coke/Pepsi/Fanta, etc plastic soda bottle. This is the kind that takes a couple of hands to hold onto. Empty the bottle by drinking or draining. Take the cap off and throw away.

Just below the point where the neck of the bottle straightens out onto the body of the bottle, cut it across. So now you have a funnel and a cylinder.

Invert the funnel into the cylinder. It should fit snugly. A piece of tape will seal it, but may not be necessary.

Fill about 1/3 of the cylinder part with a mixture of dry yeast, warm water, and honey (or sugar). Use about 1 Tablespoon of yeast (This is about 1 package of yeast bought at the local grocery and often used to make bread or rolls). Make the water just at the temperature where it is only warm to your soft skin. Like babies milk. Use about 1/3 or so Cup of sugar or honey. Mix all together and pore into the funnel/cylinder.

Wrap a piece of black paper around this to make a nice warm comfy place for mosquitoes to hide.

The trap works by creating CO2 with the sugar/yeast mixture. This gas escapes and is seen by the bugs as attractive. They will fly into the trap and then get stuck to the sugar coated sides or just wear themselves out trying to find an exit.

Change the yeast/sugar/water mixture about every two weeks or so.

This idea came from this website where a bit more detail is available along with some more pictures.

Well here's the interesting thing about this mosquito trap. I didn't really have a whole lot of affect, however that is mostly likely because i had to keep emptying it on an almost daily basis. I guess we have a little many mosquitos here. but thanks for the article, judging by the thousands of dead mosquitos, it works quite well.

Well, I am going to try this. I am all about trying homemade remedies this summer. I also read that spraying listerine works like a repellant. Can't hurt to try both.

I never knew you could create a homemade mixture that releases CO2. Thanks for the tip. There are also commercial traps that use this method and can cover up to one acre. They’re apparently really effective and can virtually eliminate mosquitoes in your yard for an entire season long.

Here's one I found online:

these C02 methods merely attract mosqitoes to you. place several of the traps surrounding the premesis. They will never make it to you.

it does not work ! DON'T TRY IT !

The CO2 released is relatively short-lived. Another solution is to toss in some grass clippings or leaves. As they rot in the water, it creates a very desirable habitat for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. This way you catch a mosquito and prevent it from reproducing.

The solution should not be dumped out- the plant matter needs to ferment. But you can swish the water around to drown the mosquitoes in there. You can also put a dunk in it to kill the larvae, if they should lay eggs in the water.

A High School Student 5 years ago

This is our Science Project today. And I disagree to those people who said that it doesn't work...

It really does work and in fact our (our group) trap is really effective. It catches a lot of mosquitoes.

Dude 4 years ago

Tried twice, didn't catch even a single mosquito.

ibrahim 4 years ago

wow this is very good.

tommy 4 years ago

It doesn't work its jank

JJ 4 years ago

The only reason it will not work is if the water is too hot or too cold when mixed with the yeast and sugar. If the water is too hot it will kill the yeast. If it's too cold the yeast won't be able to do their magic by eating the sugar, peeing alcohol and farting CO2. The water should be LUKEWARM, just barely warm to the touch. If you follow the instructions to the tee, it works well, same concept as the more expensive commercial traps. You can also make it work better by putting a low wattage lightbulb underneath to keep it warm if the ambient temperature is cold.

Cate 4 years ago

Sounds interesting Im going to try and make it this weekend and report back how it works next week! Thanks

renato 3 years ago

thanks a for you very good info.

Jessica 3 years ago

Last year I was looking these traps up, and found out that it was started by students in China. It only works in attracting a certain type of mosquito that's over there. I don't know if I'd be able to find the article again but others can try to look it up.

YOUR IDEA IS VERY GOOD. THOSE ARE THE METHODS TO BE GIVEN TO THE WORLD BY WORLD HEALTH ORGANLZATION. BUT IT SHOULD BE DEVELOPED AS USER FRIENDLY. I DON'T KNOW WHY THE AUTHORITIES DO NOT INTRODUCE TRAP LIKE THIS.

I HAVE DEVELOPED USER FRIENDLY TRAP. BUT IT IS SAY TO UNHAPPY BECAUSE AUTHORITIES NEVER INTRODUCE TRAPS LIKE THIS. EMAIL- dandeniya.cyril@yahoo.com

ANY ONE WHO LIKES TO PRODUCE MY USER FRIENDLY,ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY , NON CHEMICAL USE , NO STICKY PAPERS USE AFFORDABLE MOSQUITO OVI TRAP I CAN GIVE MY TECHNOLOGY. WHY DO WE DESTROY OUR HEALTH INCLUDING INFANTS BY USING POLLUTING

MOSQUITO REPELLENTS. IN EVERY COUNTRY IN. EVERY HOME GARDEN SHOULD BE KEPT A FEW MOSQUITO OVI TRAPS

I INVITE TO WORLD HEALTH ORGANIZATION TO INTRODUCE THIS VERY SIMPLE OVI TRAP TO THE EVERY COUNTRY. WE ARE TOO LATE. WHY DON'T WE APPLY PRACTICAL METHODS. REPORTS ARE NOT ENOUGH.
