How to get grease off clothes.

♦ Clothes are expensive and higher priced every day. The worse that can happen to clothes is to get grease on them from frying or kids dropping greasy food on their clothes. Some fabrics can’t be washed in hot water. Here's how I get grease off clothes, first I put Dawn Soap on it or even a spray cleaner and throw it in the washer and wash. If I can wash it in hot water I do. Often that will still not get the grease out of the fabric. The way I get it off after all of that. I sprinkle the spot with baby powder and then iron it with a steam iron with water in it. The powder absorbs the grease and smells good. Keep a toothbrush by the ironing board and use the toothbrush to get the powder off. If the powder doesn't come off throw it back in the washer. The grease will be gone from the powder. Sometimes using a sizing like Magic Sizing on a grease spot will get the grease off.

♦ If all of this fails you can throw it in the washer in very hot water, no matter what kind of fabric it is. If you don’t get the grease out it’s ruined anyway. Worth a try.

♦ Next time you fry wear an apron. Remember how all of our grandmothers wore an apron all day.

♦ Men’s clothes that get grease from the cars. I put vegetable oil on the spot and rub it in to loosen the grease, then put in a very hot washing with a cup of ammonia.

♦ Hot vinegar and a toothbrush will get gum off of clothes.

Recipe For Cleaning Up Cat and Dog Pee.

♦My recipe for removing cat pee. We have had some very old cats. Our Mikey lived to 22. He was never a wetter but, in his last days he had accidents. This recipe will remove that accident. Now we have a new puppy and, of course, he has an accident here and there.

32 oz Hydrogen peroxide (3%)

1/4 Cup baking soda

1 teaspoon of liquid soap

Gently mix all ingredients in a non-metal container. Do not mix or shake vigorously. Best when used fresh, but can be stored. Do not store in airtight container. Thoroughly soak affected area.

It does leave a 'baking powder' residue. If, after it dries and there is a line of residue, I just go and spray over with water.

Don't worry about the hydrogen peroxide. It will not take the color out in this percentage.

This recipe is from my niece, she does a dog rescue,

Dog Pee In The Carpet

♦If your dog or cat goes on your carpet the best thing to do is pull your carpet back and remove the pad underneath. The spot with urine can just be cut out and a piece of pad put back in. The pad is what will hold the smell. My husband is a carpet layer and has removed pad for people and replaced it with the new pad. He's laid carpet for almost 50 years and has often had to repair carpet this way when there has been a pet that wet on the carpet. If a piece of the carpet can be removed even better. Sometimes people just don't have any extra piece of carpet to replace the removed carpet so taking the pad out is the best bet.

Catch a Flea
Catch a Flea

How To Find Out If You Have Fleas In The House.

♦ If you suspect there are fleas in your house, but you're not sure. Here's how to find out. Put a bright night light into a plug near the floor. If not that, a small lamp on the floor. Just make sure it can’t be knocked over and cause a fire. Place a plate with syrup on it under the light. Use any kind of syrup you want, corn syrup works great because it's clear. Check it in the morning and see if there is a flea in the syrup or many fleas. They will go to the light and the warmth at night. Be sure to put your pet away during the night or they will be walking through the syrup.

If there is a flea you can figure you have hundreds. Take the pets out of the house get them bathed in a flea bath or do it yourself and remove them from the house. Call an exterminator. In my opinion, there is no other way that works to completely get rid of fleas but to use an exterminator. The good thing about this it gets rid of all the other pest which might be in the house, like spiders.

♦ We don’t get lots of fleas here not like down south. I always put a cotton ball in my vacuum with flea spray on it so if I do pick up a flea in the carpet it will die.

Deer
Deer
Tick
Tick

Ticks and Pets.

♦ We have many dog ticks and deer ticks. When removing them do not pull out by hand use tweezers. I once ran my hands across my cats back and could feel all these little bumps. They were deer ticks. This cat was never allowed outside, but he had gotten out one day and I found him in the woods resting under a pine tree, that was where he got the ticks. We put Frontline on him. They all died and fell off. Makes you wonder what that stuff can do to cats. Deer ticks carry Lyme disease. A person can get very sick from Lymes.

♦ If ticks are in a spot where you can't use tweezers, soak a cotton ball in liquid soap, place over the tick and hold it on there the tick should back out and into the cotton ball.

♦ If it won't come off pull them with tweezers, but there is always the worry of leaving in the heads, because of Lyme disease you shouldn't handle them.

♦This is July 2013 my husband has to take medication for Lyme disease. He had a bad spot on his leg that just didn't heal after the removal of a tick. The spot had a red bullseye. We have had unusual ticks this year and so many. When they bite the spots itches for weeks.

Ear Mites and Shower Mats.

♦ If your dog or cat has ear mites. This is what you can do. I use vegetable oil put it in a bottle and add a drop or two to each ear massage it in. It does get rid of the mites. I used this on one of our barn cats. It worked great. Have you ever handle ear mite medication? It’s terrible stuff.

♦ My shower mats get pretty bad pretty fast. We have hard water. We do have a softener on it, but it will still turn the shower mat brown after awhile. When I remove a mat and get a new one I use the mat in the dog kennel. I put it under the kennel mat and blankets it helps keep them from moving around and the dog ending up on the metal floor.

You can only do this if you have a dog that doesn't eat plastic. Otherwise, you will be taking a run to the vet. We all know what that can cost.

Cleaning And Helpful Hints Around the House.

♦ We have two dogs and three cats so I get lots of cat hair and dog hair on our furniture. I sit cat and dog beds all over and they use them most of the time, but sometimes they don’t. I use rubber gloves to get rid of their hair and then vacuum.

♦ I found out if I run a fan in the basement with a furnace filter on the front I have less hair. I get one black longhaired cat groomed with a summer cut, that helps. My big white longhaired cat is the worst for shedding, but I can't get him groomed. He is an emotional wreck as it is. Grooming wouldn't agree with him. I try to keep him combed out.

♦ Use milk to remove ink stains for carpets and fabric.

♦ If you have the big indention in your carpet from furniture. You can put ice cubes on the spot and let them melt it will bring the carpet back up.

♦ If your iron is clogged clean the ports out with the end of a paper clip. Make sure the iron is unplugged.

♦ When cleaning house carry a plastic bag along with you to collect trash from cans. Any kind of bag will do old Walmart shopping bag is what I use.

♦ If your towels aren't as absorbent as they once were, don't add fabric softener to your wash. Fabric softener can drag down your clothes and towels and leave them feeling heavy and not absorbent. This can happen with liquids and dryer sheets, the chemicals in each cause this.

♦ Take a screwdriver with you while cleaning to unscrew floor heating louvered vents. Remove vents place in the shower, spray to clean. While I have them off I vacuum the dust inside the vent and look for anything that may have dropped inside. Place louvered vents back and be sure they are open and properly adjusted.

♦ Place an inexpensive tension curtain rod inside the bathtub. Anything that needs to drip dry can be placed on the rod and the water will fall into the tub.

♦ Little flower pots are great on the kitchen sink for scouring pads or sponges. They dry better than they do in a flat dish and they're out of sight but within reach.

♦ I always hang a rod or towel rack inside my door under the sink to hang wet towels or dishcloths. I hate seeing dishcloths hanging over the faucet.

♦ Clean your toilet while you sleep? You can do this by pouring in a cup vinegar.

Fix for Removing Wallpaper

♦ Want to remove wallpaper? We were selling our house and needed to remove some wallpaper. We bought the wallpaper remover. The remover didn't work very well and the steamer machine is just a pain and takes forever. Here’s the solution we used. First scratch up your wallpaper. Just so you make some holes so the solution can penetrate the wallpaper. We used:

1 Cup of Fabric Softener (Your Favorite.)

1 Gallon of Water

We put the solution in a pail and soaked a cloth and ran it across the wallpaper. ( If you want you could use a spray bottle, we didn't.) You will be amazed at how well it works. It smells so good too.

♦ Need a neat house fast this is what I do, I use a large wicker basket at the foot of our bed. If anyone is coming, I throw things in the basket and cover it with a pretty throw or cloth. If I have to I shove items under the sofa.

When I can’t find something that is usually where it is under the sofa or in a basket. You would think with just two people in the house this would not happen. My husband never scatters, but I scatter. I'm always pulling out something and then going on to another project.

The other day I opened an old drop leaf desk I don’t use and all the stuff came falling out. Then I remembered I had put it there when the company was coming.

I have a clean house, but you don’t know what my computer room can look like. If I don’t do this it never fails someone wants to go into my computer room for something.

If I have nieces, nephews, or grandchildren come over they are allowed to go anywhere in our house to play. If they want to play hide and seek they can. Our old house had a king size bed and I use to find all the kids piled on our bed watching TV or reading books. We have long winters here kids can’t just go outside to play.

I always have to make the whole house look good I can’t just close a door.

Hints for Cleaning a Chandelier

♦ Cleaning a chandelier I take all crystals off and wash them in ammonia water rinse dry on a dish towel. They will come out sparkling clean. If you don’t like using a strong cleaner than I would recommend using vinegar. Wipe the chandelier itself down with a wet microfiber cloth.

♦ When you take the chandelier apart be sure to keep track of how to put it back together. We did this with my aunt's chandelier, forgot to keep track. It took us a while to get it back together.

♦ If you really just don't want to take your chandelier apart. Try this, put a few towels on the floor under the chandelier. Place newspaper over the top of that. Place small plastic bags over the bulbs and secure with a twist tie. This is to make sure no spray gets in sockets. Spray with window cleaner.

♦ Lampshades I use the vacuum on them. They are the dust collectors in the house.

In The Garden

♦ Deer won’t stay out of your garden add marigolds around your vegetable garden. Deer don’t like them. They are always taking bites out of my pumpkins. Last year I planted a pot with a marigold next to each pumpkin as the pumpkin grew I moved the potted marigold along. Didn't lose one pumpkin. You can also plant marigolds in and around your other vegetables.

We spray our plants sometimes with commercial sprays or we use the recipe below to spray the plants.

1 tablespoon of Tabasco sauce

1 tsp. of cayenne pepper
1/2 cup milk
1 Tablespoon of cooking oil
1 Tablespoon of dish soap
1 gallon of water

Put in a spray bottle and spray plants at least every two weeks.

You can also sparkle cayenne pepper around your plants.

We also hang Irish Spring around by our plants.

MOLES

♦ To keep moles from eating the bark on your young trees wrap them in foil. The moles can't eat through the foil and they don't like it.

How To Get Rid OF Gnats.

♦ We have a garden and always have tomatoes in the kitchen. Boy, do we get the gnats. They drive us crazy. I'm sure most people do this time of year. With recipe below be sure to use cider vinegar as far as soap goes I think you can try anything I use Dawn.

How to get rid of gnats:

1/2 oz. of cider vinegar

2 drops of Dawn soap

How To Get Rid of Spiders

Hedgeapples are used to get rid of spiders. I put these around in my basement to keep spiders out. These are not poisonous but put them somewhere that pets can't get to them. They can cause choking.

Hints for hair, nails and combs

♦ Vicks Vapor Rub works for ingrown toenails. Rub it on and if you have to put a sock over it. I will do anything to keep from going to the doctor for an ingrown toenail.

♦ If you have greasy hair and need to run somewhere, don't have time to jump in the shower. You can use baby powder just put a small amount in and comb through. It will take the grease out.

♦ Cleaning my combs I throw them in the wash with my towels or white clothes.

♦ If you gather up all your combs and brushes and want to clean them put them in a bowl of ammonia and hot water this will cut right through the grease on the combs and brushes.

♦ Clean make-up brushes and toothbrushes in part hot water and peroxide. Let set overnight and then rinse. You will be surprised at how clean they are. Lay on a clean washcloth to dry.

♦ Take 1 tablespoon of peroxide and the rest in shampoo to make one oz. Shampoo hair with this it will stripe all the build up off your hair and it will shine. Do this once a week.

♦ Use Listerine on hair for dandruff. This works for me.

♦ Tighten screws in eye or sunglass and add a dab of clear nail polish to keep the screws in place

♦ Place the shampoo in the palm of your hand, before putting on hair rub your hands together so shampoo is disbursed all over the palm of your hands and add to hair. This way you are not adding a big glob of shampoo to your hair, but spreading evenly over the hair. It will clean your hair just as well and will rinse out easier. In the winter, hair dries out so much this will help with the drying. It’s much harder to rinse out a big glob of shampoo.

This should also be done with your conditioner so conditioner is spread more evenly over hair.

Black Light

Do you really want a very clean house, get a black light? Black lights will show pet urine as light yellow spots, you really have to look to see them.

It will illuminate spills down your cabinets and grease, in your kitchen. You will be shocked when you see what has not been cleaned in your kitchen. Like all of us you think you have cleaned everything in the kitchen, maybe not.

The black light will illuminate urine left around the toilet or any spray that has landed on the wall.

Black lights work for finding lice if you think your children have brought them home from school.

Also good for finding bed bugs in motel rooms.

If you see a lot of little tiny spots all over your carpet that's just lint.

Baby In Hat
Baby In Hat

Cradle Cap

♦When we had a new baby and I was a new mother, my Mom told me to put baby oil on the baby’s head every day.I did what she said after each bath. We bathed our baby girl every day. She started getting cradle cap. I ask the doctor what I could do he told me to wash her head in Dial soap bar. I did that and the cradle cap was gone in no time. He also told me never to use baby oil it added to the problem. Our other kids never had cradle cap because I knew what to do, but always ask your doctor what is best.

(Our Mother's don't always know best)

These are the things I do around my house. I take no responsibility for anyone using the fixes I use. Try at your own risk.

I do use ammonia a lot and it is strong and shouldn't be inhaled be very careful with it. I once cleaned the floors in a house we rented with ammonia, trying to get old wax off the floors. It made me sick, I had inhaled that smell all day.

Never, never mix bleach and ammonia. It will make a gas.

Remember diaper pails? I use to put water ammonia and bleach in them add the diapers, then I wonder why it made me feel lightheaded. Years later I found out don't mix bleach and ammonia. These days we have so much information, in those days we had very little.

Use black pepper for cuts in the kitchen and not a bad idea to take camping. It will stop bleeding.

Never mix bleach and ammonia it can be deadly.

Craft Hints

♦To thread a large-eyed needle with yarn easier, put a bit of transparent tape around the end to fit the eye. Yarn glides through without unraveling.

♦ To speed bead-stringing in case you don't have any of the fancy holders, use an old washboard to hold the beads in place. The grooves in the washboard are the perfect place.

♦ Use an oatmeal box to hold yarn. Cut hole in the top and push the beginning of your yarn through.

Jeweler
Jeweler
Hanger
Hanger

Fix for Jewery

♦ Costume jewelry has turned green apply rubbing alcohol to the affected area wait a few minutes and then wipe the piece sparkling clean.

♦ Need an extra place to hang necklaces hang an old rake head on the wall hang necklaces from it.

♦ No place to hang necklaces use pill pouches to keep your necklaces in so they won't tangle with each other.

♦ Old pill box is a good place to keep rings in.

Such excellent advice! I never thought to put a cotton ball in a vacuum with flea spray on it. We have hardwood floors here, and thankfully no fleas, but that's a great idea! I've also read where citrus sprays will fumigate fleas. All of these tips are very useful! Too bad there isn't an excellent vote choice.

Hi moonlake!

These are all great ideas! We moved into the country last year and the previous owners had so many animals in the house! It was an awful smell! Our house is entire hardwood too, which made cleaning so difficult! The hydrogen peroxide recipe would've worked if we could've gotten to the stains and smells right when they occurred. However, the previous owners simply didn't do much and the smell didn't budge. We eventually had to hire professional cleaners.

I like your ideas for fleas and ticks too! I find that frequent vacuuming is good for any fleas that may have gotten in the house. I treat my dogs now, after a hard lesson learned!

Great tips! Voted up!

So many great ideas, you really know how to 'clean stuff' up! I must admit I wrote a hub about using fabric softener to remove wallpaper. Anyway as to the cat pee, pay attention Mary615, a solution of vinegar and baking soda also works. However, it does produce a chemical reaction when you add the baking soda to the vinegar so what I do is put a shallow container on the floor where the cat pee is and make the mixture there. When it bubbles over it bubbles on the smelly floor. I let it sit a few minutes and wipe it up...gone! My cat is 16 and has just started peeing here and there.

Great hub with some good advice. Can't wait to try the baby powder trick for grease! Thanks moonlake. I so look forward to your hubs and hints!

Great hub! I'm going to try your mixture for cat pee. Does it keep the cats from going back to that spot? Also, be careful with ammonia. I've heard that to cats it smells like urine and they will pee where there has been ammonia. Have you heard that? Thanks for the hub. I'll have to use some of these great tips!
