How I Clean My House in Four Hours

Today it seems that many people do not take the time to clean their homes on a regular schedule. As a result, many houses become dirty, cluttered, and unpleasant to live in. I have found that by cleaning my house on a weekly basis, I am able to complete my cleaning in about 4 hours. My house is two stories with approximately 2000 square feet, with 4 bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. The following will take you through each room of my house as I do my usual cleaning routine.

The supplies I use when cleaning are furniture polish, dust rag, comet, sponge, toilet brush, paper towels, and window cleaner. Occasionally I will use mildew removing products in the bathroom if needed.

Your cleaning will be faster if you do it every week, because things won't be as dirty and you will have less items that need to be put away. This schedule does not include deep cleaning such as window washing, carpet steam cleaning, washing walls, or cleaning a finished or unfinished basement.

The Upstairs

I begin my cleaning in the master bedroom and bathroom and do the following:

  • Put away anything left out (including clothes)
  • Dust the dressers and tables
  • Change the sheets and make the beds
  • Throw bathroom towels, washrags, and bathmat in the wash along with towels from 1/2 bath downstairs

In the master bathroom:

  • Scrub the toilet with comet and wipe down the rim, seat, and top with window cleaner
  • Clean shower stall with comet
  • Wipe off outside of soaking tub with window cleaner
  • Put away anything left on the counter with double sinks
  • Use comet and sponge to clean out each sink and then wipe down each sink with window cleaner
  • Use window cleaner to clean the mirror and counter top.
  • Replace any tissues or toilet paper if needed
  • Empty trash can
  • Hang up clean towels

Children's Rooms (I have 2 kids bedrooms to clean):

  • Make beds, change sheets if needed
  • Put away items left out
  • Dust the dressers

Office/guest Bedroom:

  • Straighten up room
  • Dust flat surfaces
  • Empty trash can

Children's Bathroom:

  • Wash towels, bathmat, and wash cloths
  • Scrub the toilet with comet and wipe down the rim, seat, and top with window cleaner
  • Clean out the bathtub with comet and sponge
  • Use comet and sponge to clean out sink and then wipe down with window cleaner
  • Use window cleaner to clean the mirror and counter top.
  • Replace any tissues or toilet paper if needed
  • Empty trash can
  • Hang up clean towels

After all the upstairs rooms are cleaned, I then use the sweeper to sweep each room, while in the master bathroom I sweep out the garden tub and the exhaust fans (with a hose attachment). I also sweep out the exhaust fan in the kids' bathroom. I then use the hose attachment to sweep the steps as I go downstairs.

The Downstairs

Living Room and Dining Room:

  • Put away any items left out
  • Dust all wood surfaces

1/2 Bathroom:

  • Scrub the toilet with comet and wipe down the rim, seat, and top with window cleaner
  • Clean the mirror with window cleaner
  • Clean the sink with window cleaner
  • Replace tissue and/or toilet paper if needed
  • Hang up washed towels
  • Empty trash can

Laundry Room:

  • Straighten up shoes and coats in this room
  • Clean off top of dryer if needed

Kitchen:

  • Put away any items left on the counter
  • Clean out the sink with bleach
  • Wipe down the microwave, stove, dishwasher, counters and table with window cleaner
  • Empty the trash can and clean the stainless steel can with silver polish
  • Get rid of newspapers
  • Clean out the dog's water dish
  • Wash dirty dishcloth and hand towel and replace with clean ones

Family Room:

  • Put away items left out
  • Dust wood surfaces
  • Clean glass surfaces with window cleaner
  • Dust TV with special cloth

Once all these rooms are clean, I sweep the downstairs floors and every few weeks mop the floors in the kitchen and 1/2 bathroom.

A Great Feeling

Getting all your cleaning done will give you a great feeling of having a house that is all clean at one time and you can then relax and enjoy living in an orderly environment.

Happy Cleaning!
