How to prevent your toilet from clogging

If you have ever stayed at a hotel and the toilet became plugged, you have the luxury of calling housekeeping and have them come and unplug the toilet. Unplugging a toilet, while a distasteful task, is not a difficult one and the housekeeping help you called to unplug your toilet, comes armed with the trusty plunger and in about 30 seconds it is all over.

At home, or when visiting friends or relatives it is a different scenario as you have to do most of the unclogging yourself. You really don’t want your hosts to know that you have plugged the toilet and alas! there is no plunger in sight. Here are some preventative measures you can take to avoid the embarrassing situations that occur with a toilet is clogged.

You can’t control what you let loose in the toilet and sometimes there may be a lot more than you expected. However, you can minimize the potential for clogging by pausing to flush between the packages you drop. Only do so when it is safe to and then you can resume your deliveries. This reduces the amount of waste that the toilet plumbing has to handle each time you flush.

Putting a lot of toilet paper into the bowl can also cause clogging. As with the advice given above, add paper in stages and flush frequently. No one is suggesting that you use less toilet tissue, or none at all since this may not be an option but you should know that the more you pile in, the greater the possibility of blockage when you try to flush. Alternate flushing with the adding of paper and you will see a huge difference.

The type of paper you use also has a lot to do with the clogging of your toilet. You can control this in your home by purchasing better brands of toilet paper. Coarse toilet paper causes a lot more damage than softer types. You are also aware that you should,t put anything in the toilet bowl that is not an approved toilet paper. Pads, wet cloths(even those that claim to be safe) should never be put in the toilet bowl.

To avoid clogging your toilet you may need to check your plumbing on an occasional basis. There may be a need to repair or fix the toilet plumbing if you get frequent blockages. It is possible that the toilet plumbing is old and doesn't function at its maximum capacity causing a weak flush that doesn't do the job. You may need to replace your toilet completely with a new, energy efficient, low flow one but if you are choosing a low flow toilet, do ensure that it comes with a superior flushing ability

Preventing or reducing blockages in your toilet is as easy as carrying out simple maintenance to your toilet plumbing system and reducing the stress placed on your toilet plumbing system.

This is good advice. I would think people would be annoyed if they kept hearing the toilet being flushed so often, but I am sure that annoyance would be better than having to deal with a clog.

Thank you tipstoretireearly. Thicker sheets aren't always better.
