How to Get Mold out of Clothes

To understand how to get mold out of clothes we must understand that mold will always grow in warm and humid environments. The longer the mold is allowed to grow, the more difficult it will become to get the mold out of your clothes. From personal experience, I’ve noticed that people forget to turn over their laundry. Even though the wet clothes in the washing machine are clean, they are still subject to mold and mildew growth. The longer you wait, the worse it’s going to be! Time is really your worst enemy.

Here are some simple and easy ways to get mold out of clothes. Clothing is perfect for mold to grow on. It can eat through your clothing, it’s usually wet from sweat or being in the washing machine, and often times in a humid environment.

How to Get Mold Out of Clothes Methods:

Vinegar. This seems like an odd idea, right? Vinegar works great for removing mold from cloths! Add about ¾ cup of vinegar to your wash along. Don’t use any detergent, just the vinegar. The vinegar will work your clothes and get that stinky mold out! So what’s worse, the smell of vinegar or the smell of mold on your clothes? Luckily, the smell of vinegar washes out very easily. Simply place the article of clothing back into the washing machine and run a normal load with your favorite laundry detergent. You will have your clothes back to normal in no time!

Oxy Clean. Oxy clean is a famous laundry detergent product that has been marketed all over the world. If you don’t have a ton of mold on your clothing, this will do the trick. Use about ¾ cup of Oxy Clean and run a normal load and this should do the trick. Let your clothes dry in the sun and run the process again until the mold is completely gone. It may take 2-3 cycles depending on how bad the mold growth is.

Dry Your Clothes Out. Mold cannot survive in dry conditions. It needs humidity to grow and live. Simply take the infected clothes into the sun and let them air dry for a day or two. This will kill the mold. After the clothes have dried, take a brush or a broom and knock off all of the mold you possibly can. After this, run a normal load of laundry in your washing machine. Be careful not to breathe in any of the mold spores while you are cleaning your clothes. Some molds have been known to be very harmful to our health.

Run a Normal Load of Laundry. Many times you can get away with just running a normal load of laundry to get the mold out of your clothes. If the mold hasn’t been growing for very long, this method will usually work. Simply launder the clothes, rinse them and dry them. You may consider using an antifungal spray after the clothes have dried if they still have that musky smell to them.
