How does a pot filler work?
A pot filler faucet is quite simple. It has two handles. One at the base and one at the tip of the spout. Both of these handles are simply ON/OFF handles. You can turn the water on or off with either. If the pot is full of hot water, it may be easier to reach one or the other, so it's good to have both options. Pot fillers are COLD water only. This means installation is easier since you only need one water line. It also makes hooking them up to that water line very simple.

Before you start installing a pot filler faucet
Initial pot filler installation planning:
A pot filler is relatively easy to install, but there are some things to consider before you begin. Proper planning will help you make sure your installation of your pot filler is easy and successful.
A pot filler must be hooked up to a water supply. You will need a copper pipe running to the site of installation. This water line must be near your stove since the pot filler must be close enough to fill a pot.
Where on the wall should it be installed?
The pot filler must be installed high enough on the wall to accommodate your largest pots, so do a quick measurement. Be careful, since with some pot fillers, the spout is lower than the installation hole, and with some, it is higher. Make sure to consult the SPEC SHEET for your pot filler to make sure all your calculations will be accurate. Along with the suggestions I have made for GREAT pot fillers below, I have included a link to the spec sheet so you can get an idea of what the dimensions are like.
Does the pot filler have a clear path?
Is anything in the way? The pot filler can swing back and forth so you need to make sure the path is clear. Most pot fillers have a double jointed spout that makes it easier to maneuver it to the right position.
What is behind your stove?
In order to install a pot filler faucet, you must be able to drill a hole for the pipe to stick out. If there is something preventing you from drilling the hole - for example a stainless steel backsplash, or tile, etc. - you may need to take this into account during your planning stage.
Consult a Plumber or Contractor?
This job is quite easy and for someone fairly handy it should be no problem. However, you may want to seek some professional advice if you feel unsure about anything regarding the installation.
A QUICK NOTE: If you cannot use a wall mount pot filler due to some restriction your situation has presented you, consider installing a DECK MOUNT pot filler faucet, which can be a great substitute.
Preparing the Site for installation
The main prep work required to install a pot filler faucet is to run the water line. This can be a difficult task depending on your set-up. It is the most difficult part of the entire job, but once you have a water line running to the site of installation, the rest is a VERY quick and EASY job. If you are remodeling your kitchen or building a new home and your walls are still open, preparing the site will be especially easy.
If you just wish to add a pot filler to your current kitchen, make sure to consider a deck mounted option as it might be easier than going into your wall.
Keep in mind if you are remodeling/building - This may be the BEST time to decide to add a pot filler. They are very convenient and a great investment, so save yourself a lot of work and order one during this phase.

Installing the pot filler faucet
Step-by-step information to install a WALL MOUNT pot filler. You can also find a video with instructions below.
Step 1: Read the instructions! Pot fillers made by different manufacturer's may have slightly different installation instructions. If you are doing this job yourself, make sure to familiarize yourself with your pot filler faucet's instructions. Here is an example of the installation instructions for the Danze Wall Mount pot fillers shown above:
The instructions below are basically good for just about any pot filler however.
Step 2: Put the pot filler temporarily in place against the wall so you can see where you need to drill the screw holes. Mark the spot you plan to drill with your pencil. Be careful not to make drill holes into the water line! Remove the pot filler and drill the holes.
Step 3: Apply Teflon tape (or plumbers putty) to the water supply line BEFORE you screw on the pot filler pipe. Wrap the tape around the pipe threads, pull it tight, and tear. The Teflon tape will fit tightly around the threads. This will help prevent the pipe from possible future leaking.
Step 4: Place the pot filler's retention ring onto the wall (use any washer's included) and fasten the screws so that the ring is secure.
Step 5: Install the Pot filler faucet by screwing it onto the protruding pipe nipple. Be sure to include the escutcheon plate to cover the hole in the wall. A rubber strap wrench is a great tool to tighten the pot filler to the wall as it will not damage the finish. DO NOT use a wrench or pliers as they will leave scratch marks and possibly damage the actual pot filler itself.
Step 6: Once in place, use a level to make sure the pot filler faucet's arms are not slanted. They should be perpendicular to the floor.
Step 7: Congratulations! Have a Beer. Or a glass of water if you don't like beer. Turn the water to the house back on and try boiling a pot of water. If you're hungry, why not make some spaghetti? It will be very convenient thanks to your new pot filler!
