Little Tikes Race Car Bed: A Buyer's Guide
Little Tikes Race Car Bed: A Detailed Review
The time has come for the Little Guy to move from his crib to a ‘big boy’s bed’ in his own room and so choosing the correct bed can be a little daunting. One popular type of bed is the Little Tikes Race Car Bed which will make it a race-time to bed. In the following review I am going to look at all aspects of these race car beds so you can decide weather one of these beds would be right for you and your little race car driver.
First, lets see what Little Tikes race car beds are available.
Little Tikes Sports Car Twin Bed
Little Tikes make a selection of race car beds including their standard Sports Car Twin Bed which comes in either primary blue, cherry red, pink, white, green, yellow, or black, although some of these colors could be subject to availability.
Little Tikes Lightning McQueen Race Car Twin Bed
Their most popular bed is the Little Tikes Lightning McQueen
Race Car Bed, which is based on the little hot-shot race-car character in the animated
Disney movie Cars. The dimensions for this and the standard Sports Car Twin Beds are both the same, but with this one, the Little Guy will be able to sleep knowing he's safe and sound in Lightning McQueen.
Little Tikes Lightning McQueen Roadster Toddler Bed
Now the Little Guy’s younger toddler brother doesn’t have to feel left out because he, too, can have his own race car bed with the Little Tikes Lightning McQueen Roadster Toddler Bed. This smaller car toddler bed uses a US standard crib mattress (approximately 52" (132.1 cm) x 28" (71.1 cm) x 6" (15.2 cm)) with support or a 29" (73.7 cm) x 51" (129.5 cm) x ¾" (1.91 cm) sheet of plywood. Don’t forget that you must supply your own mattress, support and plywood. The Little Tikes Roadster Bed will be good for ages 15 months to 5 years.
One thing to be aware of with The Little Tikes Roadster Bed is a number of customers have found that some holes on parts of the bed don’t align correctly with the male post when it is being assembled, so it might be worth having an electric drill available just in case. Hopefully Little Tikes have rectified this since writing this review. Nevertheless, this is a great car toddler bed which will have him ready in no time to drive him off to Snoozeville.
Moving from Crib to Twin Bed Will Now Be Easy
These race car beds contain realistic styling and detail and they also include a great little toy box which is built into the front of the car under its little bonnet. These beds are designed for ages 3 and up to as high as 7 or 8 as most kids would love having this bed for a long time.
Parents who previously had problems with the little guy’s transition from crib to twin bed in his own room have found that once they’ve bought one of these fun beds he has been more than happy to sleep in his own room, and even better, he has been sleeping well. The Little Guy might be so excited that for the first few nights he may even want to go to bed early just to sleep in it.
A Little Tikes Race Car Bed Is Sturdy
You will find that a Little Tikes Race Car Bed is extremely sturdy and will handle the test of time well with its double-wall plastic construction. Parents have been impressed with the bed’s durability noting that they’ve had sleepovers with two kids in it as well as it being used in boisterous games such as being used as a trampoline.
The bed is constructed of the "pebbled" plastic common with most Little Tikes outdoor toys, so if you have experience with other Little Tikes toys, you’ll know how durable this will be.
Adding a Mattress
These race car beds are sized for a standard twin mattress and box springs which you must provide yourself. If you don’t have twin box springs, you can use a bunk bed support board, or a sheet of plywood with the following dimensions: 72" (183 cm) x 36" (91 cm) x ¾" (2 cm). The bed comes with wooden mattress supports and the height for these can be adjusted to two levels. You will probably want the lower level if you are using a mattress in conjunction with the spring box. Please be aware that these wooden mattress supports will not support the mattress by itself. The maximum weight these can support is 200 lbs. (91 kg).
One aspect of these beds which has made them very popular with parents, and one reason why they have chosen these beds over others, are the high sides which are high enough to stop the Little Guy from rolling out. Even if he moves around a lot in his sleep as he dreams of driving his own car, you’ll never need to worry because he will still be safe.
The sides are a bit higher towards the top of the bed, so the Little Guy can climb in and slide out from the foot. You’ll never need to add side rails to these beds, although I have heard that if you really do need more of a side, then you can take out the box springs so that the mattress is enclosed on all sides.
What to Be Aware of
Because the bed uses a standard size twin mattress, you may find there is a 4" (10 cm) gap along one side or 2" (5 cm) gap on both sides between the mattress and the bed, so it’s best to make sure that the mattress is centrally positioned well. This isn’t too much of a problem and it is easy to reach down by the mattress and pull out fallen toys. If you want the mattress to be over to one side, then placing pillows or a folded blanket in the space can be a good option.
One thing to bear in mind is these beds are larger than a regular bed, so make sure you have room to fit it in. If you are going to put it in a small room you should measure first to make sure it would fit. The size of the bed is 27" (68.6 cm) high x 58" (147.3 cm) wide x 94" (238.8 cm) long.
These race car beds are easy to assemble and on average take between 1 to 2 hours, but sometimes even less. The directions are very simple and they can be downloaded in advance from the Little Tikes website. A screwdriver is the only tool required, but be careful if you use a cordless one because you don’t want to strip the holes as you will be screwing into soft plastic. To disassemble, just do everything in reverse. I’ve added a video below which I found on YouTube so you can briefly watch the different stages of assembling the bed.
Before assembling you should open the box and sort the pieces to check that all the parts are there. You can check these against the picture diagram in the instructions which will show each screw. Mistakes can happen and if so, call the company for instructions on how to obtain any missing parts. The Little Tikes consumer service centre can be contacted in Ohio on 1-800-321-0183 during Mondays to Fridays. For those in the UK, contact 0800-521558.
It’s worth bearing in mind that the wheels are only held on with one screw, so with these, a little care should be taken. Liquid nails may also be used to add extra strength.
The only thing people seem to have had a problem with has been attaching the car’s decals. With these, just take your time and be patient and the decals will go on smoothly. It might be a good idea to have someone assist you by starting at one side of the sticker and slowly applying from that side and rubbing to the other. Once applied you can’t remove the stickers to re-adjust them, so be careful. A number of people actually recommend attaching the decals before assembling the bed, but you will have to leave the wheels until last because you have to screw the wheels on and you don’t want to tear the centre of the sticker. If you are really unlucky with these and mess one up, you can call the consumer centre above and they can help you obtain new stickers.

Ordering a Little Tikes Race Car Bed
The Little Tikes Race Car Bed isn’t found easily in stores, but it can be found on-line. Bear in mind when having it delivered that the box is very large, so someone must be home to receive it. You’ll need to schedule a delivery time for this.
With a Little Tikes Race Car Bed, the Little Guy will have so much fun that he will want to tell everyone about his new car, and most importantly, you will have your young driver racing off to dreamland every night.

Customizing a Little Tikes Race Car Bed
Finally, how about customizing a race car bed?
I’ve only seen it done on one bed, but it could be something to consider with a little know-how. This would be a great way for a one-off bed which no other little race-car driver would have. With some imagination, the sky, or should I say, the road’s the limit.
For those less practically minded, I believe Little Tikes did used to sell extra customizable decals, but I’m not sure if that is something they do these days. If they did, that would be great. Maybe some entrepreneur should look into it. I always thought that personalized decals would be a great thing, especially if they could some how contain the Little Guy’s name. I’m sure that would make him the happiest little guy in the world!
