About Mahogany Writing Desks

Mahogany writing desks are beautifully crafted pieces of furniture and the durable wood adds striking beauty to any room it graces.  Mahogany is a dark hardwood.  There are several species of mahogany, some of which are endangered.  Modern mahogany furniture is made from commercially grown trees, some of which are cross-pollinated.  Mahogany reveals a straight grain, reddish brown in color which darkens with age.  It has a wonderful reddish sheen when polished.

Mahogany wood was used to produce desks in a number of traditional fashions and antique mahogany desks of the regency, Georgian, Victorian, Chippendale and gothic style, as well as others are still available.  Reproductions of these classic designs, often built by traditional methods as well are also available for purchase.  Mahogany writing desks sometimes are referred to as the new antiques, as their lasting durability can withstand the test of time and be passed down to younger generations.

Georgian style furniture fashioned itself as a more ornate and elaborate version of Queen Anne style furnishings.  They were heavily proportioned and featured cabriole legs ending in ball or claw foot.  The claw was generally an animal motif.  The wood was ornately carved adding to the appeal.

Regency style furnishings fashioned themselves as an enrichment of the Georgian style featuring structural and ornamental design elements of Greek and Roman persuasion.  A melting pot of cultural influences including Egyptian motifs, French style brass work and Oriental influences were embraced by English cabinet makers to create new works of art.  Similar to the regency and Georgian style was the Chippendale style, further subdivided into French, Chinese, and Gothic influences.

The use of mahogany in writing desks has persisted through the generations.  If you find images of these older styles and the fantastic desks produced you’ll begin to understand and more fully appreciate the enduring beauty of mahogany writing desks.

Mahogany writing desk are great if you like this style but are a bit more expensive

Thanks the comments, guys. I agree, I really like the look of a good solid mahogany writing desk, but it's very true that these are going to be more expensive than anything made from a more run of the mill timber.
