Maintaining Your Granite Kitchen Countertops – 5 Things You Shouldn’t Do

Granite countertops are tough, and if they are properly maintained, they can last a lifetime. There are some basic things you must do to ensure your granite countertops are protected: prevent damage, especially spills and scratches; and clean regularly to remove dirt and dust that can cause damage in time.

  • Don’t neglect to blot coffee, wine, soda, or fruit juice spills right after they occur. All these substances are acidic and can leave permanent stains. While granite is resistant to stains, it’s only a matter of time before some damage may occur if spills are not tended to. Make sure you have a clean, soft cloth near your countertop, and blot spills right after they happen.
  • Don’t clean your countertop with dish soap. While it won’t damage granite like it damages weaker stones, if used repeatedly it dulls the shine of the surface. Use instead a special stone or granite cleaning formula. Your countertop provider should be able to recommend you one, and generally even be able to sell it to you.

  • Don’t fail to use coasters. While coaters are not as necessary for granite countertops as they are for marble ones, they should nevertheless be used. They provide excellent protection for glasses and bottles, and help dramatically reduce scratches affecting the surface of the countertop.
  • Don’t put hot pans or pots directly on your countertop, unless you use hot pads. While granite is heat resistant and although some manufacturers will tell you that you can do it, it can potentially damage the surface. Grit gets trapped between the pan and the countertop and causes scratches. A thermal shock can also occur, cracking the stone. But this is rare – scratches are much more common. Hot pads are inexpensive and easy to get, so there is no excuse for not using them.
  • Don’t put perfumes, creams, or lotions on your countertop. These are insidious substances for granite countertops, because although they don’t usually damage it right away, they remain on the surface unobserved and in time stain it.

According to Durham granite countertop provider, when you buy granite countertops make sure you ask your provider for maintenance tips. The above tips can be applied to all granite and most other natural stone countertops, but different products might have specific maintenance requirements.
