Picking Your Perfect Kitchen Countertop Color

You have just made a wonderful decision to remodel with a new countertop. Or maybe you are moving into a new home and wish to make each room your own by adding a personal touch. .Of course you want to make sure your new countertop isn’t just high quality, but also that it matches the rest of your new kitchen. With all of the choices on the market, it is good to have a plan of action when choosing a new kitchen countertop.

The first step of course is to choose the proper material for your countertop. The best materials are made of natural stone. The most popular choice for a stone countertop is granite because of its durability and beauty. Granite, however, is porous and must be sealed on a regular basis. Sandstone is also a popular countertop material, but is also a high maintenance natural stone because of its porous qualities. Slate is not as beautiful as either sandstone or granite, but is not porous at all and is virtually maintenance free. Slate does not give one such a wide variety of colors and patterns as granite. So, it all depends on what qualities you desire in a countertop as to what natural stone you choose.

Once you have decided on the natural stone for your kitchen countertop, you will want to decide whether you wish to use a neutral color or whether you wish to make a bold statement using color and pattern. How often do you repaint the rooms of your home? How often do you remodel or redecorate? The answer to these questions will help you in your color choice since a kitchen countertop is a relatively permanent fixture in your home. Another thing that will help is if you borrow color samples from your tile store. Bring home the tile samples and see how the color choices fit with your cabinets, flooring, walls and other décor. Consider what the lighting in the kitchen does to the color of the countertop.

Next you will want to consider whether you want to match colors or use complimentary colors to the rest of the room’s décor. A complimentary color can set off the kitchen nicely and allow you flexibility in future remodeling.

The final step is to consider your own kitchen usage. Do you actually use your kitchen for cooking a great deal? Do you have a large family? Do you entertain a great deal? If your kitchen sees a lot of usage, you should consider purchasing a countertop that has a speckled medium to dark color in order to hide dirt and maintain its beauty, even when in use. If you want to go for a classy, elegant look, the dark, shiny surface is the chic choice, although this will show dirt, fingerprints and smudges easily. Elegant counters tend to need a lot more care and maintenance than those countertops that hide dirt.

Whatever your choice in color, it pays to take your time and consider all of the alternatives. If you use careful consideration, you will be pleased with your final choice and enjoy your countertop for many years.
